Subject: Antifreeze explosion IP: Logged
Message: I don't know much about cars, but I found this site and my "mechanic" is at work, so I thought I would ask for her...Back on Thanksgiving weekend, we noticed antifreeze sprayed all over the engine, mostly toward the front of the engine. We filled it back up and had no problems until about 3 days ago, when the truck started overheating, the heat quit working, antifreeze sprayed all over the engine, and it is loosing antifreeze like crazy. This morning we tried to put more antifreeze in it and it just came straight back out. We're stumped. We looked around the engine and didn't notice any obvious hose problems or anything. Could it be the radiator, the water pump, a hose, thermostat, block busted???? We're going to look some more, but maybe someone can help point us in the right direction.

Message: It can be any one of the parts that you have named. Try refilling it with water and trace back the location of the leak. Keep in mind that there is a hole in the water pump behind the pulley that will allow water to escape when there is a failure. Also an Achilles heel to these engines is the coolant bypass hose located beneath the accessory support bracket underneath the air conditioning compressor. This hose connects the water pump to the intake manifold and is not easy to see with everything in place.

Message: where is it spraying from?
that would be where the problem is.

Message: I suspected the water pump (although the owner of the truck was predicting gloom and doom of the block being busted...) It seems to be leaking from right behind one of the pulleys, just as you described Mark. I think you just confirmed my suspicion. Thanks guys!

Message: if its leaking behind the middle pulley then you just need to replace your water pump. The water pump has a weep hole on it so that when the bearing goes out... it leaks coolant. Just a way to let you know about it.

Message: If you replace the pump I would also replace the
bypass hose that is on the back of the pump they
are like $6 and a pain to change you need to
remove the alt air mouting bracket and lift it up
to get to the clamp on the back of the hose.

Message: good call larry!
sometimes when people think the pump is bad, it turns out that that hose just busted.
completely forgot about it.
