Subject: 3.92 Gears

Message:
What is the deal with the 3.92 gears? Do the help with speed or something? Or even hp? I plan on doing quite a few of mods to my 99 Dakota, but I need to find a few things out first. I have already put on a cold air intake (I can already notice a difference in the hp ther, didn't think that I was going to so soon though).I plan on adding an exhaust. Pease let me know about these gears and about any other inexpensive mods that can be done. Thanks

higher numerically rearend ratios, e.g.3.92, 4.10 means it takes less hp to turn the rear wheels. gear sets run around 150.00 - 250.00 IMO- something you shouldn't do if you don't have the proper tools or knowledge. you can trash the rear quickly. check out speedtweaks.com or dakota usa.com or search here for some cheap mods.

Well I think that I would be able to get them cheaper. I kinda have to hook up. I know a dude that can get parts for anout 50% off or even more than that. What gears would you recommend and why?

what truck/engine do you have and what are you looking for? i've got an '00 QC 3.9 5 spd w/ 3.55's and 235/75/15's. perfect for me. engine turns 1950 rpm @ 60. about the same as a 4.7 w/ 4spd auto and 3.92 gears. but, i don't tow a lot. it all depends. wish i did have the LSD though.

I have 4.10 and 235x60x16 tires. They work great for me as I do most of my driving in town. I wanted my truck to be very quick off the line which it is with 4.10's. My gas milage actually went up for around town driving. I have not checked my highway milage yet.

For all around use, the 3.92 are best. This all depends on the tire size as it affects the final drive ratio. Stock and taller tires need larger (3.92 or 4.10) gears while shorter (40 and 50 series) tires can get away with smaller gears (3.55 or 3.92). For quicker starts you want larger gears, for better mpg you want smaller.

It all depends on what you want.

what gears you got now? IMO, start with a V8 TB. found one for 45 bucks @ www.car-part.com. good muffler, e.g. Dynomax 17748. see how you like that. like i said that's my opinion. 3.92's would prolly be good for you, especially if ya got an autosplatic.

The gears are stock I do not know what they are. I have already added a cold air intake, next I plan on adding an exhaust, probably Flow Master.

stock could be anything from 3.55 to 4.10. look on the inside of your glove box, very bottom. you should have a build sticker. mine says 3.55 - 8.25 corp.

heres the deal with the 3.92 and all ratios, for the tires to spin once, with 3.92 gears, the drive shaft had to spin 3.92 times. wiht 4.10, the driveshaft spins 4.1 times for the tires to spin once. the higher ratios are better for larger tires. they provide more torque, but less tire rpms, so do not just put on 3.92s with stock tires without knowing that they will break loose more often and you will go slower and get worse gas mileage. 3.92's if you do a bit of highway driving...
4.10's if you rarely drive on the highway...

From what I've read from Larry... you will probably gain a lil gas mileage IN TOWN, but on the highway since your engine will be running faster you'll lose a lil mpg. Like Steve said and I never even thought about before...you'd prolly break loose more often (depending on the size and quality of the tires?) and you would have a slower max speed. Then again...who really needs max speed? You usually don't max out when racing on the tracks do you? I guess if you were street racing a longer distance, it could be a problem. Anyway...that's my $.02.

Oh yeah...and going off of what I've read. I've yet to see anyone dislike their higher gearing (with the 3.92's). I haven't read a lot from people with 4.10's but those who have mentioned em, like em...but most of them drive in town and not on the highway.

Josh

ya, i have 3.92s in my 96 4x4 and i just put 30s on. everything works perfect, except i still spin em when tryin to take off(there is snow n ice on the streets up here) but the gears and tires work perfect together. the higher ther gearing, the bigger the tire you can run with no damage to any of your drivetrain. 25s with 3.22 or something would feel the same to the engine n tranny as my 3.92s with 30s. I have a 97 4x2 Sport with stock 3.92 gears. I have 235/75/15's on my truck . That is a little bit over stock size. (My stock was 215/75/15). If I punch the gas I can't get my tires to break lose(for the most part). Sometimes, if the conditions are right, they will squeal. But usually they don't. My low end is not the greatest. Once I hit about 3000rpm it really picks up. I don't do a lot of highway driving. My gas mileage is 13.1 mpg which I wish was higher. The only mod done so far is a cat-back flowmaster exhaust. I think the 3.92 gearing gives better top end speed. Well I just thought I would share that with everyone.

Well Right now I have 235/75/15 on my truck but in the near future (Hopefully) I plan on getting either 18's or 20's. Should I also go with a higher gear or not?

I have a 88 3.9 3spd with 3.91 from a 73 duster off the line kills almost everything. The only problem is at 40mph im turning 2000rpm so that sucks but off the line sure is fun.

freaky thing is....I have 235/75/15 on my 94
3.9 and with 3.5 with open rear end....wish I
had LSD cause ever since i had my catalytic
converter gutted...umm yeah...my low end
torque jumped from nothing to everything...and
i boil the shiznit out of the right tire. I am going
to get a posi trax system from
v8performance.com and im going to have it
installed soon...its sad that I can smoke my
tires from that modification...and now my
friend in his r/c 95 s10 can't pull on me at
all...btw he only gets in front of me because he
will grip better...for the reason of my excessive
tire spin off the line.
