I have an 1997 V6 2WD with an automatic tranny and 3.55 rear.
I find my self driving with the OD off alot. Is it worth changing the rear gearing. Would you recommend 3.92 or 4.10 gears.

Depending on what size tire you run (about stock height) the 3.92 gears are the best overall. I put the 4.10 gears in mine because I do almost all of my driving in town. The 4.10 gears make a Dak quicker and actually improved my in town gas milage.

if you dont do a lot of highway driving and you want quicker acceleration (who doesnt?!?), then i would go for a shorter gear. I put 4.10's in mine and like whitedakota said, better city mpgs

Sounds like 4.10 band wagon here so I may as well join in!

4.1 for little or no highway, 3.9 if you do some highway.
You can always go 3.9 and a shorter tire at the track to get your gearing down a bit.

I have a 97 4X4 with the 3.9L auto with 3.92s and I still leave OD off all the time also. If I had the money I would buy 4.10s for the front and rear, but I dont see that happening soon.

I have 235/60/15R's, I do about 65 miles everyday on the highway, should I go with 4.10's? I race quite abit so I need some better take off, I'm not worried that much about mpg. If I can still get like 18 or so on the highway/city then I'd be happy. I have 3.55's now but I don't know if it limited or not, put it in N, and spin one tire the other one goes the same way?

I have 235/60/15R's as well and I bought the 4.10 and a Dana Trac-Loc from 4wheelparts.com. It works great! I do mostly in town driving and I get 18 mpg or better.

To check for limit slip, jack the backend up, spin one rear tire and if the other tire spins the same way you have one.

With the O/D trannies it don't effect you that
much, I have even seen these trucks get better
gas mileage with lower gears.

I am running the 3.91 sure grip with 29" cooper
ST's for the winter in the summer I run 4 US
Wheels with a 26" height low pro street tread.
With the Low Pros I would say I am very close to
4.10 and the truck is a lot quicker

For example stock truck at 60
3.55 1600
3.91 1900
4.10 2200

The 4.10 will knock your milage down about 2 mpg
on the highway and improve it in town but your
truck will be a lot quicker.

The 3.91 is a better way to go if you don't need
quite as much power and perf and on a lot of
trucks will actualy improve mileage becausr the
motor don't have to work as hard to get upto
speed.

If you plan on a lot of racing 4.10 just better
perf without sacrificing any gas mileage 3.91

Thanks all for the feedback. I think it will make more sense for me to use the 3.91 gearing. I don't race but I do like the added torque. I drive mostly around town with some highway miles involved.(Madison beltline)
Larry,your motor build is just the way I would rebuild my 6er. Torque motors are FUN to drive. I also drive a BMW M3 and I always get a smile driving it. Great torque out of a 3.2L motor.
I'm curious what would the current cost be to build a stroker. I currently have 81,000 on this truck so it's not a cost effective time to overhaul yet,but it won't be long.

crank pistons and rods $3000 about twice what a
rebuilt engine costs so if you think about it for
a while you will reilize it is well worth the
money.

I did mine at 80,000 there was nothing wrong with
the motor at all when I did it. I now have just
over 10,000 miles on it and its losing up very
nice and running better than ever.

Just yesterday I took Jason one of our mechs for
some smokes and he was just freaked at how fast
my truck was. My brother one of the bodymen also
could not beleave it and said man this thing is
quick.

Gaskits and labor but I don't charge myself so for
me free labor.

The stroker crank gives these motors some real
nice low and midrange improvements. I cant say
exactly because I did a lot of things at the same
time but I would say 35 to 50 HP would be a close
guess using all other stock componints like cam
and heads. You can also go to 10 to 1 comp ratio

It makes a very noticeable diff

I just came across a deal on a built motor today,I won't go into detail now.
What I am intrested in knowing is will a 1998 V6 motor transmission and possibly the rear end be a direct bolt in to a 1997? What is my engine, tranny and rear end worth? (again 1997 2wd with 81000 miles). I belive the speed sensor was switched to the rear end in 1998 but I'm not sure. I would be retaining my 1997 ECU. What problems might I come across/Extra prats needed??

all of it will bolt in.. but if you use the 1998 tranny and rear end, then you will need the 1998 computer because they read and display the vehicle speed with a different system.
