Subject: Exhaust Header Studs IP: Logged
Message: Hey all. I'm new to your forum and have found it to be VERY useful in helping me out with my 98 Dak CC 4x4. I have some broken off exhaust manifold studs on the passenger side and I am having trouble finding them for my dak. The dodge dealer said that they are 5/16-18 / 5/16-24 X 4-1/8". Can anybody confirm this for me? If so, does anybody know where I can get them (besides the dodge dealer). I refuse to allow them to do any work on my truck. I just allow them to give me the free inspections...:)
Thanks,
Dakota911

Message: I can't confirm the exhaust manifold studs. You are talking about Manifold versus Header? Here is a possible solution: someone who just install new headers may have the old studs lying around. I hope this helps.

Message: Thanks for the insight. It is a manifold stud that broke on me. Federated Auto has them, but they are only 3-7/8" long. I'm wondering what the extra length is for.

Message: From what I remember which wasn't a long time ago, the length accomodated the thickness of the manifold and the attach the heat shield. Too bad, I think I threw out my studs out already. I'll check. Should be two studs and two bolts. I took out the stud by using two nuts against one another. I hope you have enough of the broken stud to take out of the heads.

Message: Yep. I actually dove in last night and saw that on the passenger side manifold the front two fasteners are broken off. The fastener closest to the front bumper should be a bolt. The other one was a stud because it was hanging onto the heat shield for dear life :). The back 2 look ok. The stud broke off right where the threads started inside the head. The bolt feels like it broke off flush with the head. We're going to use some easy-outs to try to get them puppies out this weekend.

Message: good juck..we did this on my friends dakota..ended up taking out the fender liners and drilling them out then retapping the holes during our header instalation. The bolts are usually so hard and crusted from the heat of the exhaust an easyout will not work...but its worth a shot

Message: mike, easy-outs actually "dig" into the broken stud to help remove it. I have been soaking the studs/bolts with penetrating oil for the past 2 days and will continue to do so until this weekend. That will definetly help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Message: I appreciate the offer, but I just went ahead and ordered them from dodge. Hoepfully they're not the same crappy ones that I'm replacing. Thanks again. How do you like those JBA stainless headers? I was looking at getting those down the road.

Message: I like them a lot, especially the way they look. The manifolds are so ugly, these are so streamlined and clean.

Message: Those headers look a lot better than my rusted out ones..:) Well, I did all of my mods this weekend....new Moog lower balljoints, new Moog inner tie rods, new Rancho RS9000 shocks, Dynomax Ultraflow cat-back, and drilled out the broken manifold bolts. yeesh...what a weekend. Might as well forget about trying to remove the broken-off studs with easy-outs. We had to drill and re-tap. NJQCDak, the studs just happened to show up broken one day. I believe it's an issue with the cheap bolts that dodge used. Replaced them with some beefier 3/8" studs. Runs like a champ now. Next project....home-made FIPK.

Did you go for the ceramic coating on your headers?

Message: No, I didn't. It would cost another $200 to do them. They are stainless, so they should last forever, I think the main benefit of the ceramic is to prevent heat conduction. They do get really hot. But I'm sure the iron manifolds do too.
