Subject: P1391 and strange problem IP: Logged
Message: I've got a bone stock "99 V6 5spd. with a
strange problem. Starts up fine when cold.
Starts driving fine, but when you drive it exactly
7 miles or so, it starts bucking, pinking,
backfiring, and missing like mad at any speed
or RPM, in any gear, and will not go over 40 or
so. Has done this for the last 5 or so times I've
driven it. Rarely dies. It will stay like this until
you stop for an hour or so. after that, seems to
run good the rest of the day. Got check engine
light on, and Auto Zone says its P1391,
"Sometimes can't see Cam or Crank Sensor".
Does this mean they are going bad, or is
something else going wrong.
Thanks

Message: Pull your dist cap and see if you can wiggle the
shaft, not rotational play but a wobble
Be sure the reluctor wheel is not lose on the
shaft in the dist.
check the pickup to be sure it is not lose on the
plate.
If you can not see anything like this than I would
say yes one of the sensors is going bad.
The pickup in the dist tells the injectors when
to pulse. The crank sensor controls the base
timing tells the computer where the crank is and
than the comp adjust the timing for rpm and load
conditions
It could also be the coil going bad and not
working right at certain temps from the way you
explained it, its a posibility
Also uplug and pysicly check all the connections
crank sensor, injector sync, and coil

Message: thanks for the response Larry.
I'll try those and see. I had the same thought
about the coil and changed it and the 02
sensor today. No luck. Still have the problem.
thanks
