Subject: 03 3.9L mods?? IP: Logged
Message: i don't own a Dakota. so i'm not too familiar with them. but i do know a thing or 2 about Ford mod motors. but anyway...
a friend of mine just bought a 3.9L quad cab and used it to trailor his Harley Davidson Night Train to Daytona. he said it was "gutless". his words, not mine. he already has 3.92 gears in it. what kind of proven mods can he get to help in the power department?
1. can you adjust the timing without a chip?
2. are there aftermarket cams?
3. under drive pulleys?
4. are there any exhaust mods that improve low end torque?
5. what V8 throttle bodies work on the V6 and don't lose power?
6. any other mods?

Message: 1. yes, you can relocate the crank sensor, behind the passenger side head, down towards the oil pan and gain 2 to 3 degrees of timing.
2. Yes see krcperformance.com or socaldakota.com
3. see store.summitracing.com (I have ASP pullies)
4. Add a flowmaster muffler from summit racing
5. a v8 one will work or see thefastman.com
6. Hughesengines.com for several things
cold air intake knfilters.com or summit racing
Superchips programmer at superchips.com
MSD ignition from summit racing
JBA headers
Flex-a-Lite eletric fan (remove the stock clutch fan)

Message: do the chips actually gain performance on a stock engine? i know for Mustangs, off the shelf chips are questionable at best. beit superchip or anybody else.
what about the 1.7" RR's in the other thread? was that for the 3.9L?

Message: The 1.7 RRs would also be a great performance mod, but if your friend's quad cab is still under warranty he'd prolly want to wait to do them because I'm pretty sure it'll void the warranty.

Message: BlownGT,
The 3.7L V6 would be the correct engine your friend has. Dodge in no longer making the 3.9L V6.
This engine has overhead cams which is different than the old 3.9L. RR's will not work any more(no place to put them). As for the throttle body, well you may have to wait, the 3.7L has a throttle body like the jeep. Unless you can find one off of an '03 V8 with the same intake set up.
I strongly advise not trying to adjust the crank sesnor yet. The dealership will love to decline warranty work because of that mod. Especially if the sesnor goes bad.
The only reason I know this is because I work for a Chrysler service dept!
You can make some mod's, but I would be careful which ones you make.

I thought the 3.7 was a 2004 model year change. Did they start to change over at the end of the 2003 model year?
I got my '03 CC in early summer and it has the 3.9--at least I HOPE it's the 3.9, now that I've already done the TB and 1.7 RRs. :-P
Anyway, GT's friend's truck is an '03, so it could (should?) have the 3.9.

Message: The 3.7 is in the 04's they did not use it in 03
its a 3.9
The 3.7 can be modded almost the same way.
Bigger TB, better exhaust, computer upgrade and
kenny bell has a supercharger out for the 3.7
there are cams avalible that do the same thing
as the 1.7's
They do have a knock sensor so some mods will have
no afect at all
If you bone up on mopar you will see they changed
the throttle body on the 4.7 in 03 bigger gave
it more power and better mileage so as you can
see most of the same mods will work on the 3.7
which is just a choped 4.7

Message: Over the weekend, I did two stages of modifications to my '96 CC 4x4 3.9 auto 3.55 gears. First was underdrive pulleys. The truck has 165,000 miles on it and the timing chain was finally in need of replacement (yes, first time it has been replaced.) It took about 4 hours to do timing chain, water pump, and under drive pulleys. Using a friends G-Tech we ran before and afters with the underdrive pulleys. The G-Tech showed about 7hp difference.
Second stage was to put 1.7 ratio Crower rocker arms on. This took about 1 hour to install and adjust. Very simple install if you have done them before. We then took the truck and my trailer, loaded up my friends 99 Ram 2500 cc 4x4 diesle on the trailer and took off. (He was off roading and hit the oil pan on a stump!) It was about a 2.5 hour drive with some hills. At the start it seemed a little slugish, but as the computer learned the new mods, the performance got better. After unloading the truck and driving back, unhooked the trailer and got the G-tech back out and ran three runs. It showed about 30hp over the initial base runs.
Not sure if these numbers are typical or not. One thing we made a mistake on and did not realize until it was too late. Base runs were done with 1/4 tank of gas and final run was done with a full tank but we did not adjust the G-tech for the weight difference. So I would highly recommend the 1.7 on the v6.
Other mods already done are Cold Air Intake, High Flow Cat, TB, high output fuel pump and adjustable regulator, 24# FMS injectors and Dynomax exh. Next steps headers (May make my own because I am not real fond of the JBA's) and 3.92 gears.
We did not lack any power in pulling the trailer with the truck on it, but the tranny does seem to slip a little now? It might be time for tranny #3. OOPS! I think I did it again. Too much weight for the Dakota's tranny.
