What exactly does it do and if it makes the tranny work better and last longer why don't the DC engineers put it in there in the first place. Cost cutting?

Because people would rather have a smooth shift.

What the kit does is increse presure and make it
shift faster to avoid slipage and heat build up.

Firmer shifts

when it shifts slow the clutch's are actualy
slipping untill fully enguaged creating heat
and wear
