Subject: Need Help! Starts...then shuts off IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1992 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9 liter V6 in it.
On morning that are just a little bit cool (80 degrees), my truck will start, rev up to around 2000 rpm, then shut off. If I try to hold the gas down to keep it running, it backfires and runs very rough.
I have to keep starting it over and over until it finally runs correctly. It is getting worse and I know that I'll never be able to get it started if it ever gets very cool.
Please help! What should I do? I looked at the O2 sensor and it seems like a big pain to get to.

Message: Wow, where to begin. Does it rev up on its own? Does it eventualy straighten up so that you can drive it or just quit? The first thing I can suggest is to check / clean the iac valve. What is the trucks state of tune? Have you cheked engine vacuum with a gauge? Check the search feature here for common problems. As for the oxygen sensor, you should be able to access it from below with the special o2 socket with the vehicle on jackstands.

Message: It may be a fuel pump going bad. The extra demand on it on cold start-ups may be to much. If it always starts fine when it is warm then that may be a clue also. The opening up of the throttle will add additional fuel loads and the extra lean mixture would cause the problems you stated. Get your fuel pump checked before going on to other possible problems.

Message: Good point whitedakota2, some of us have had the pump quit without any warning. 92Dakota how many miles are on your truck and do you know if the fuel pump has ever been replaced? For a fuel delivery problem, a injector cleaning kit could pressurize the rail independent of the fuel pump and rule out a bad pump.

Message: Thanks a lot for the responses.
I will try the fuel pump as its the original.
The O2 sensor was a lot easier than I thought to change. It still has the problem, but it seems to run smoother....or maybe it's my imagination. The gas mileage has been 11-12 mpg, so that was my main reason for changing it.
Here's what it does....
I start it up.
Like all engines, it revs up higher than idle when you start it since the starter motor turns at a higher rpm.
Well, instead of coming back down to idle RPM, it just keeps going down to nothing until it conks out.
If I try to keep it running, it backfires and barely runs. Maybe it's not getting enough fuel to run???
I have a V8 throttle body on it.
Where is the IAC valve? Is it the one on the back of the throttle body? If so, I cleaned it thoroughly when I put on the V8 throttle body.
I really appreciate your responses as I do not have enough money to get it professionally diagnosed.

pumps go bad in the first 6 months for no reason

Message: it won't be the O2 sensor as that only works in closed loop and when your truck is first started it runs open loop till the water temp gets up to a certain temp that varies by year. Check fuel pump/presure and if yours has it, fuel filter, many trucks have them added by there owners over the years. Also look at the coil, PCM/sensors and the inside the distributor reticulator (pickup). Some vehicles literaly hace 2 circuits that run the fuel Pump. i remember quite a few years ago someone I knew had a Chevy that would do the same thing. Turns out it had just that, One curcuit stated the car and another then ran the fuel pump with the car running. turns out the fuse for the running curcuit failed. replaced the fuze and all was well. To you picky people out there that love to say "but that's a chebby not a Dodge" I know that but the info just might help someone with a chebby and the same problem.
