Subject: 93 knocking & timing question IP: Logged
Message: Hey all...I got a 3.9L and there is a little bit of knocking going on in the engine. Sounds like its coming from the drivers side. Only does it when it's idle. What could this be? Push rods? Rockers?
Also, when should a timing chain be tightened, and how do I know its loose, or should be replaced?
I currently have 100,060 miles on my 93 dak.

If you decide to get the tensioner I would also
replace the chain while you are in there.
Anytime you replace a chain you need to check
your injector sync

Message: I have a 93 Dakota and it has a little knocking going on constantly and I can hear the timing chain rattling around like crazy at idle. Mine has 145,000 miles on it. I'm not going to worry about it. I'd like to replace it, but it is a big job, and I don't have an extra car to get to work, so if I screw something up, I'll be stranded.
