Subject: Whistling, serp. belt, squeel-NEED HELP! IP: Logged
Message: Ok, here's my story:
Since day one that I've owned my 2002 3.9L V6 2wd Dak Sport, I've been hearing a sort of whistling noise that would get faster as I accelerated. I've taken it to a dealer and they said it was normal. I just recently took it to another dealer for some service and I mentioned the noise. They said it was the power steering pump. They replaced it and still there is a noise. I brought it back and they tell me that the noise they heard which is related to the power steering pump was different from the noise I'm hearing. The noise I'm hearing is normal. WELL, IT'S FRIGGIN' ANNOYING!!!! So, in the midst of all of this, my serpentine belt has started squeeling.....mostly at idle when stopped at a light. I had the dealer also change my belt. I brought them a Goodyear Gatorback belt because Dodge parts are crap and I've heard good things about the gatorback. So, they installed the belt for now charge. MOST of the squeeling went away accept for some random squeeling that I hear when I decelerate and drive below 40mph. I don't know what else this could be. I believe I bought the right belt (part number 4070975. It's actually for a 2001 3.9l Dak. There where no records for a 2002 in the stores computer).
So, now after getting a new power steering pump and putting on a new gatorback belt, my truck is making a different noise that I've never heard before. I can hear it most when I drive with the windows closed and the radio and vents off. It's now like a reving, kinda airy sound when I accelerate.....it's hard to describe. Could this be related to the new belt I put on? Is something else going? Or am I just going crazy?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for listening to my long a$$, rambling on of a situation.

My belt was squelling and chearpin alot but now it has a better sound to it alot ballsier than before. plus my engine doesnt bog down at all when i run the a/c. I had big-o replace it with a goodyear belt it looks alot different from the mopar one the inner track pattern is cross-hatched. Bought this truck new off the lot and with the new belt on it, its never run the great before. feels alot faster no loss of power at all

Message: OK, just to update what the sound is like. I listened to it again this morning and it's like a high pitched whistle (not the same whistle I was getting before) that revs and gets faster when I accelerate. It definitely sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine. Any ideas?

Message: My Dakota was squealing and the belts did not last very long. I replaced the tensioner pulley and the problems were solved. It was not very expensinve about $20 or so at Auto-zone and did not take long to replace.

Message: i have the same squeeling on my 2000 sport 3.9 auto. i'm thinking about getting performance pulleys if not atleast a new belt. the new pulleys should add some extra power. Anyone got any other suggestions?

Message: Check:
Tensioner pulley. Squirt some WD-40 on the bearing while it's running, If squeeling stops then replace it soon.
Your A/C Clutch may be shot.
Bearings in Alternator.
Sounds like a bad radio ground causing the interference in your speakers.
Just my thoughts, Anybody else?

Message: Maybe I'm just going crazy or this whole ordeal with my truck has just driven me up the wall but it also seems as though, after changing the belt, that my fan is moving faster and racing more. Is that possible or am I losing it?

Message: i wonder how many will loose a finger or two or even a hand putting their hand by the running fan just to put some metal cleaner/rust preventer, on a pully that should only be worked on while the engine is off. that's right my stupid little shank, wd-40 is a metal cleaner/rust preventative and it is NOT designed to lubricate bearings, altho the stuff does have some lubrication characteristics, a true knowledgeable mechanic would never use it to lubricate anything that moves as fast or as long as a bearing in the tensioner.

Message: That's intelligent, gb2000. This idiot aside, there is not a product made that will lube a belt. If its squealing it's simple: the belt is glazed and needs replacing. After 40-50k replace the tensioner too. Or do you prefer to walk?

Message: Intelligent is my middle name... and thanks for commenting on my post which is only a month and a half old. If you care to read the other posts made around that date, you'd also understand where my intelligence came from. "Smarterthenu" was trolling around and posting messages against many of our valued regulars (like Shank as you can see above) trying to put them down and run them off the boards.

Message: The goodyear gatorback belt will introduce a whistle type noise, after I replaced my stock belt I thought I was supercharged...I kinda like the noise it seems to scare imports and other Dak's!!!

Message: Just a question, do you hear the whistle only when accerating? Does it stop when you let off the accelerator? If so it may be your rear end. The rear gears can make noise just like your describing. Although annoying it isn't harmful to the gears. If you think this may fit your problem yoy might try changing you rear end fluid and inspecting the gears. Good luck
