Ok, I apologize for the "newby" symptom description.
Baby ('98 3.9l v6, stock w/ electric fan replacing the spinning boat anchor and 32k) has developed an annoying "lope". I think that's how you describe the irregular rpms at idle. The rpm goes up and down no more than 20 in either direction, but it is enough to be noticeable. It seems to me like the engine is trying to stall, then comes back. I haven't had the timing chain adjusted in 32k (that I remember, and I believe my memory is reliable).
Accompanying this "lope" is a loss of power that was fairly gradual for the last few years, but more noticeable in the recent months since the "lope" surfaced.

Anyone have a better solution than replacing the stock timing chain with a AE Clevite double roller from Checker?

How offten do you change plugs cap rotor wires,
clean your IAC

Tune Up and then start trouble shooting.

I see a lot of posts on here with small problems
that a good tune up would cure.

Always be sure your truck is in a good state of
tune before you start replacing other things

I got the Bosc Plat +4s put in with the electric fan in Dec'01. I didn't know Baby HAD a cap & rotor until I went looking for it hard. Sad, huh?
Therefore, it's never been cleaned. My Haynes book recommends checking it every 60k, but I'm only at 32k. Same with the IAC.
I hate to broach the fear of busted plugs, but should I check to ensure the +4s are still +4s? I've heard they sometimes become +3s or +2s. (They are platinum coated ceramic and should NEVER be adjusted)
Any suggestions?

dude, get rid of those platinums, they cause nothing but trouble for the daks, go get some autolite 3924's or go one step colder with 3923's you'll love it and so will your baby.

My MSD eats caps every 7000 miles yes get rid of
the +4's and get a set of autolight AP3924 if
you are stock.

Don't go colder if your bone stock they will not
run right in a lot of these trucks, some do but
all trucks are differant

If you have a cold air intake and a bigger TB get
the AP3923

The AP has the platnum tip and you can get away
with a gap .005 over factory setting and they
run very well in these motors.

Ok, I think I already planned on getting rid of the +4s. How "bone stock" do you mean? I yanked off the "spinning boat anchor" and replaced it with an electric that never lets the engine get above 185 degrees (in addition to permenantly fixing the bad clutch drive unit that came stock). The cold intake will take some talking, but I would like to put one in someday.
In the meantime, I'm planning on replacing the plugs and I'm looking for the Borg Warner cap and rotor Bernd has on his 97 3.9l. However, I'm a little paranoid (see: overprotective) about my Baby. I've heard the TB diameter betwwen the 97, 98, and 99s are different (46, 42, 46, I believe), is there any reason why the BW brass cap (C273) and brass rotor (D223) would NOT work on a '98 3.9l?
