Subject: RPM question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 360 Ram and a 03 v6 Dakota. Both are 4x4s. The Ram seems to drive in a higher rpm range then the Dakota. At about 75 mph it is about 2500rpm, the Dakota is only at about 1950rpm at the same speed.
I ask cause it seems to really lack any getup and go and am starting to think it is the tire, gear ratio that is causing this. Once it gets into the rpms it feels like it has some power. But then it shifts.
Is this common?

Message: You really can't compare a fullsize ram 360 with a dakota v6..

Message: I know that my dakota would be slower. I didn't expect it to be slower then 4 cylinder a ranger. I have the SXT with the factory bigger tires, and was starting to think that maybe the tires were the problem. As when I drive with the over drive off, higher rpms, it feels peppier.

Message: Yeah V6s have less torque than bigger engines such as your 360. The V6 relies on rpms to make its power. Usually the smaller the engine the more rpms it needs. Like the ricers rev to what 8k.

Message: Billy, what size are your tires on the ram and the dakota? I'm guessing they are realitavley close. Reason i say this is because at least on the dakotas all the tire combinations fom the factory come out to about 27 inches for the (215/75R15, 235/70R15 and the 255/55R17) tires. Take a look at the gear size you have in the differential. That will really affect your RPM's more then the tire size. I had the 3.21 gears in my V6 dakota, 5-speed and changed up to the 3.92 gears. Now i am doing almost 3000 RPMs at 75 miles per hour.
