 Subject: Thermostat and Tranny Cooler

I tow a 16' Ski Boat about every weekend. I have a '93 Dak Sport 3.9 auto. I always run with O/D off. I have noticed the temp climbing up to about straight up on the gauge, from about halfway between vertical and the low line when not towing. Will a 180 thermostat help my truck run cooler when towing and around town? Also, does anyone recommend any specific type of trans cooler on the Dakotas? I was planning on a 5000# capacity cooler. Thanks.

To keep your engine cooler you would really be looking at a higher capacity radiator. Everyone thinks a cooler t-stat will make there truck run cooler. However, in reality is just affects how long it takes your truck to warm up, not your coolants maximum temperature. When your towing in the summer even with no t-stat you would still get to the same temp.

Drop a 180 thermo in there it will help.
A thermostat does not effect how long it takes
your truck to warm up they just open at different
temps.
with a 195 (stock) my guage ran right in the middle
with the 180 it runs a quarter the way up not half
as with the 195
a 180 will open around 185 a 195 around 200
once open it will maintain a lower temp.
A trany cooler will help also an elect
fan on a thermo switch, just get a small one
and mount it in front of the Rad blowing cold
air in when needed.
