Message: Use Mobil 1 oil. As far as filters are concerned, get rid of the Fram crap and use either the Mobil 1 or Wix (NAPA sells 'em).
Redline probably is the best for gear oils, call there 800 number and talk to 'em, they know what needs to go in your truck.
Coolant? I've heard it's all the same. Just be sure it's mixed to the correct ratio and change it yearly.

Message: Use the Mobil 1 10w30 and Wix 51085 oil filter. Great Combo. Fram is junk. Crappy bypass valve design and poor filter media as compared to the Wix. The Mobil filters are great but not worth the $10 plus your going to pay for it.

Message: I agree that Wix seems to be better engineered, but I do not have a problem with Fram Tough Gaurd, which seems to be hard to find now. I do not have a problem with most oil filters unless they are generic. Why does everyone hate Fram? Keep in mind I do not race my vehicle.

Message: Mobil 1 with the Fram Tough Guard or Double Guard, not the Orange 1.
Get rid of the Penzoil QUICKLY! Penzoil breaks down rapidly leaving nasty sludge deposits in your engine. If you've run penzoil for more than 2 Oil changes I recommend double flushing your system before using good synthetic. Buy the Synthetic Oil you are going to use, equal # Quarts of a cheaper Oil & 2 cans of Engine Flush (Gunk), 2 Good Oil Filters (your choice).
Use 1 can of Engine Flush with the existing oil (Follow Directions). Add the Secondary Oil (I have used the Wal-Mart brand before), Drive normally for about 100 miles. Add Second can of Engine Flush (Follow Directions).
If the Oil comes out nasty disgusting like you just drove 3,000 miles, repeat step 2. If it looks decent then add your synthetic oil & good filter. Next Oil change most of the rest of the engine deposits will go with it. I did notice it start leaking more after I cleaned out the sludge, About a quart a month. (2,000 miles)
I Did this when I bought my '93 Dak with 173,000 Original miles. The engine blew at 217,000 and when I tore it down the guts looked hardly used. Please don't blame my actions for the engine explosion, the #3 rod broke and slammed into the #4 causing a chain reaction. What more can you expect from a 10yr old motor that was Used&Abused for 217,000 miles?
I tell people all the time, DON'T USE PENZOIL! I would use Wal-Mart Generic Oil before Penzoil.
I haven't tried ZMAX, I use Pro-Long in ALL Of my engines.
Just my recommendation & 2c

If it don't work hit it with a hammer, Still don't werk? GET A BIGGER HAMMER!

Message: I had my rear main seal start to leak badly right after warranty was up 38K or so. The mechanic at the garage I brought it to told me there was a tremendous amount of sludge built up in the engine and asked if I had been using Pennzoil. YUP. I immediately switched to castrol bottled oil at the quick lubes and more recently have converted to the fully synthetic Mobil 1.

Message: I have been using Mobil 1 Synthetic and Wix filters since I purchased my 2000 Dakota V-6. I had previously owned a 94 model and done the same. I have had no problems with mine dlowing gaskets. The 2000 model had been abused, looks like the previous owner never changed the oil or used some cheap stuff. I was pulling finger-fulls of black gunk out of the fill cap area. after three oil changes using the Mobil one and Wix filter the engine is now a lot cleaner (no more sludge). I would say go for it. I wil agree Fram filters are crap especially since they started selling them at Wal-Mart.

OIL SLUDGE PROBLEMS
I would like to recommend two products: 1) Amsoil Engine Flush when SWITCHING a "higher-mileage" vehicle from dino to synthetic, and 2) Auto-Rx for a SLUDGE PROBLEM such as yours ( www.auto-rx.com)
Per the company, Auto-Rx is a synthetic, biodegradable, highly effective, safe metal cleaner. Auto-RX is gentle, slow acting, and thorough. I know many vehicle owners that have used it and no one has reported any problems. I feel that for SLUDGE PROBLEMS ... Auto-RX is a better choice, and for a FLUSH prior to switching from dino to synthetic Amsoil is an EXCELLENT CHOICE.
Auto-RX is inert in your oil,it does not negatively affect any aspect of your host oil except to clean and disburse crud to the oil filter. There are no negatives associated with it's use. Auto-RX was developed as an alternative to solvents for a slower non hazardous alternative that does not deplete, but ends up disbursing the crud in a very small form ... small enough to flow by bearings etc.
If you decide on this Auto-RX product (For the record ... I do not sell it) FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS RELIGIOUSLY. Then I hope you visit my website, request a free catalog, and become an Amsoil customer.

Message: I have a ' 93 Dakota (135,000) miles on it.I've always used SAE 10W-30 in it. I think the synthetic is a waste of money. I recently started using high mileage oil + Lucas oil stabilizer. I use fram or wix filters (don't think there is a hellofalotofdifference.NHRA endorses fram/NASCAR endorses wix. ST Pa.

Message: I think the synthetic sux, along with the fram filters. I have a 91 Dakota that has 148,000 miles on it (it does not smoke at all).... I have always ran NAPA filters and Tropartic oil..... I would say stay far away from penz oil.... I toasted a motor running that crap.
