Subject: manual tranny fluid IP: Logged
Message: I was misinformed (by the dealer no less) that there was no listed OEM suggested fluid for my '91 dakota's manual transmission. I used ATF +3. I just read in the Haynes manual that regular 10W30 engine oil is the suggested fluid. Can someone tell me if this is going to be a problem? I would think that ATF would be even better than engine oil.
Thanks!

Message: Don't use ATF, that is a fluid used for pressurized systems like automatics. I would think you would need a gear oil like a 80 or 90W. 10W30, I would think, is too thin a lubricant for a manual transmission. You do mean (ATF) automatic transmission fluid don't you?

Message: Hey, I have a '91 with a 5-speed as well, just bought it back in late Feb. and have no idea what tranny fluid to use as well. I checked it and it looks (and smells) like a heavy gear lube, not 10W30 like the Haynes manual states. Input is appreciated by all.

Message: Yeah, the stuff I drained from the tranny was dark like engine oil. The Haynes manual does say 10W30, 80W90 is used for the rear differential. I thought it was dark simply because it was poorly maintained by previous owner. If ATF is designed to stand up to pressurized systems, shouldn't it work anyway? If I am wrong I will change it this weekend to 10W30.

Message: The Hayes manual lists the transmission using 10w30 motor oil and if its a 4x4, the tranfer case uses ATF. In my '94 I use Castrol Syntec 5w-50 for the transmission, Mobile 1 ATF for the transfer case and Valvoline Synthetic 75w-120 in the axles.

Message: I have two stick shifts [if you don't count the wet clutches in my motorcycles]. My honda civic surprised me as it requires a 10w30 oil, and all of my previous experiences indicated a gear oil would be the norm. My 97 dakota [ax-15] 5spd requires gear oil. I don't remember which weight [75w90?], but that seemed more 'normal' to me than my honda.
However, 'ATF' means 'Automatic Transmission Fluid'. If you have a manual, you should not run ATF in the tranny if you want it to last. As for what your specific truck requires: I can't say. I checked both my owners manual and the Haynes service manual to get my fluid volumes and weights, and that is the only thing I can recommend: other than sticking with the same type of fluid. If it requires oil, don't use gear oil or ATF. The same for the others. After all, if your truck runs on gasoline you don't fill it with diesel do you?

Message: I have a 1992 Dak V6 5spd.4X4. I went thru this quite a few years ago. Transfer case takes ATF,at least dexron II, I run DexIII. The manual trans. depends on your transmission. The NP-2500 uses 10W30,The Aisin Seiki AX-15 uses 75W90. If you can't see any markings on the trans the AX-15 has a 1" spacer between the tailshaft and the main housing. At least on the 4X4 models. From what I've seen the NP-2500 was the more common trans.,but you should check which you have.
As for ATF, When I lived in Alaska for 3 years,I ran ATF in my 5spd, 40,000 miles, no problem. ATF DexronIII is the recomended oil for constant below 0 degree temps. I live in PA now and run 10W30 syn. in mine. I would change yours but don't worry the ATF you put in wont hurt it. It's not just for Auto trans, most Transfer cases use it now.
Hope I helped and not confused.
