Subject: Water Pump? IP: Logged
Message: I need to change the water pump on my 93 dakota. How do you remove the fan from the water pump? The truck overheats after about 5 minutes of driving, so I pulled the water pump off, but am stumped on how to remove fan assembly. If there are any other ways for the truck to overheat that fast, let me know.

Message: what did the pump fan on the inside look like?
Radiator core could be plugged.
Thermostat could be locked up.
It's nearly impossible to get the fan off the pump without special tools. Oh BTW the threads run backward on the fan clutch.

Message: If you consider special tools a screwdriver and a crescent wrench then you would be right. All you have to do is stick a screwdriver across the water pump pully bolts to hold the pully, then loosen the nut with the wrench (it is reverse threaded) If it's really stubborn yo may need to back it off with an air hammer or something but 90% of them will come right off with the wrench and screwdriver, its easiest to do it while its still on the truck.

Message: I think they mean that the threads are what we in the machining business refer to as "left handed" instead of lefty-loosy righty-tighty, the are lefty-tighty, righty-loosy.

Message: The last 1 we pulled off we fabricated a 4 prong "Fingers" that went into the pump end and made a Large socket fit on it, Used a 1" Drive Impact Gun and a Pipe wrench on the Clutch Nut. Yes it was stubborn but we weren't worried about the Water Pump housing, Just the clutch and Fan.
Good Luck!

Message: On my 94 3.9 v6 the treads on that big nut was regular ccw as you face it(left to loosen)I used a big crescent wrench and put the air hammer on the wrench handle rather than deform the nut which was begining to happen it loosend up easly for me.Bolt replacement is important as they are different lenths(made a cardboard diagram of pump face to store bolts in)I have yet to replace the pump as its 20o here in NY.Any tips appreciated my Email is qlty@webtv.net Please put wtr pump in subject box dak94
