Subject: JBA Headers and other mods IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 dakota with a 3.9 and I am wanting to put a set of headers on. I know there has to be quite a few people out here with them. Do they increase mileage? I am also considering getting an underdrive crank pulley and a dynomax 17748 to increase gas, torque, hp. Hopefully in that order. Here are my main questions?
1) Where is the best place to buy JBA headers or other brands from, price wise?
2) Will these additions help gas mileage maybe 1 to 2 mpg? (crossing my fingers)
This truck sucks the gas down. I get about 18 mpg highway with a tonneau cover and cold air intake.

Message: Actually the stock magnum exhaust system is very efficient. It is highly unlikely that you will see and mpg or power increases by modding the exhaust before you mod the intake. That money would be better spent on a cold air intake and throttle body. Try www.intenseperformance.com and www.thefastman.com for these mods.
Just another example of the three nippled cross eyed assclown we like to call v8performance trying to make a buck instead of actually providing valid advice and selling a consumer a product that will actually help them. Thanks v8performance!!!

the exhaust mods should come later when you have completed top engine mods.
ryan i must say that you are the entrepreneur, but you are not customer oriented.

Message: Well the advice I gave was based on actual results, since I have a 2000 v6 myself. The Exhaust DOES give you better gas milage. I had it on my truck first thing for about 3 months before doing any other mods. My milage increased about 1 mpg with just the exhaust. He did not mention whether or not he had an intake so I didnt suggest it assuming that he already had one.
So basically what you're telling me is that an exhuast system, headers, and a set of pulleys wont increase your milage by 2 mpg? Are you a moron or just plain ignorant? Just my 2 cents.
BTW I am not out here just to make a buck. I have turned MANY people away from products that they didnt need. He asked a specific question and I gave the answer. Lets just not assume that his truck is bone stock alright? Thanks alot.

Message: Well I figured the headers and muffler would help make the truck breathe better and then in return receive better gas mileage. The underdrive pulley was just an added bonus for mileage and torque. The truck is stock with no other mods except the cold air intake, s-bolt, and has recently been tuned up.
Well since I am getting mixed responses on these products, what do you guys recommend to do increasing the mpg?
Please try to stay with the subject and not try and bad mouth anyone not unless they deserve it.

Message: I have an intense performance stage II intake and a dynomax 17748 muffler installed. I also have the Autolite plugs AP3923, I went with platinum instead of copper because I noticed better performance out of the plats.
With those mods I gained about 1-2mpg. But it is hard for me to really tell as I drive it so inconsistently. But I am getting better mileage overall. My next mod is the throttle body.
I'm more looking to add a little more performance, I don't mind not gaining mpg but I definitely don't want to lose any...so far I have not been disappointed with my mods.

you are on the right track. A good high performance muffler will work great... all will yeild about the same performance level, its just a sound preference. Not many people like em but when i had the Jet Stage II module it helped my MPG a lot. Other things to keep in mine is tire size... the bigger the tire, the better Highway miles... the smaller the tire, the better the city miles

Message: I'm sorry, I did not realize that mr dickie allready had a cold air intake. My recomendations would be for a replacement muffler, under drive crank pulley and a good throttle body. My advice would also be to not buy from ryan, a fastman tb direct from fast man is 250 shipped to your door with the best customer service out there. A fastman tb from ryan is 275 plus 15 bucks shipping with the typical triple nipple customer service,,,if the 3rd nipple and the sub par service and knowledge is worth the extra 40 bucks to ya go right ahead.
Ryan, we still buddies? If its cool I'll still be over later =P

Message: Intense had a good point also, Taller tires get better overall gas mileage but your engine works just a lil harder to get that big rubber rolling. Also the Width of your tires make a huge difference in Wind resistance and your Hydro plane ability in rain. Wider is not always better in this aspect. True 33x12.5/15 TSL Thornbirds look awesome and are superior in Mud but a nice LT235/75/R15 will get better gas mileage. I've seen the wide 255/60's one the RT/S Dakota which looks nice but causes more wind drag and better Hydroplane than narrow tires will. Look at what Nissan and Toyota trucks are running for tires, Nice and Tall but also Narrow for higway driving and better gas mileage.

i am new to the boards and have gone back to many old posts because i just bought a 00 slt and wanted to get informed.
i can't tell you how many times i would see ryans post without any info other than to show his URL (web site). I looked there and looked elsewhere having almost thirty years in the computer enviornment i surf very well.
found that he could use my opinion, not slam, i own two businesses myself and he should know what i was talking about.
i didn't miss the air intake but then again i'm not with knowledge i'm looking for knowledge and i didn't ASS-U-ME (assume)what or what was not installed on the guy's dak.
i just suggested more assitance less BUY from ME.

Get the underdrive pulley???? <-- Really don't want to spend the $ on new belt and pulley if it doesn't help.
Get the TB from Fastman???? <-- I had a s-10 a while back and put a Holley Pro-jection TB on and man that really helped performance but unsure about mpg cause that has been at least 5 years ago.
No dice on the headers then from what I got from previous responses...
Remember this truck is stock, thanks...

Message: If you want to save a few $$ you could just upgrade your TB to a stock V8.
I have the JBAs on my V6. I didn't notice any improvement with just the cold air, in fact it was a bit of a pig. Once I put the TB and upgraded the muffler though, it was a different story. My mileage is great 18-20 - IF I keep my foot off the gas.
As far as underdrive pulleys go, I've hear they are a good mod but you have to be careful running them in a real hot climate.

lowered 2/3, 255/55/17, Snugtop tonneau, royal purple (engine/diff), bosch + 4's, 180* stat, airaid intake with powerstack filter, gibson single side swept cat-back, fastman 46mm TB, tire psi 40/36(front/rear), 87 octane,
18 - 20 is the mpg I get all day, everyday. This is just what the engine design + drag + weight equals out to.
No real magic solution: throttle down, less mpg; throttle up, more mpg.

Message: Save up for the headers while you do other mods first. Headers should be last - or nearly so.
The stock system is pretty good - remember, JBAs have extremely short primaries (pipes right out of the heads), which will yield more HP (hi-RPM power) as opposed to torque (lo-mid-RPM power). Since the throttle body flows relatively inefficiently, that's a good one to go after.
Here's a good order to do your mods in:
Good alignment job (really!)
180 deg t-stat
Synthetic oils throughout (must have)
Dynomax muffler (or equivalent)
Upgrade throttle body (I like my Flometrics!)
Tonneau (best for freeway mileage)
Headers
Go for the less-expensive mods first; you won't realize any real benefit with headers until you have done the other stuff first.
I am secretly saving for headers next...

Message: Here are my mods in about the order I did them.
First I got more into the engine, than opened up
the exaust to let more out. Than I added the
ignition to burn it more efficently and advanced
the timing. I got better mpg with jet chip and
changing the crank sensor location but I still
was not satisfied.
Than I pulled it out and changed the crank rods
cam and pistons. Not the strokerkits.com kit but
all custom made parts made just for me that were
not cheap or advisable for the average owner to do.
Longer stroke, Higher compresion, Apexi controler
because the stock computer did not even come close
to the fuel I needed to run this babe.
Just got my reprogramed ASE Chip back will be
trying that tonoght and this weekend.

Message: To Response to Dickie. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota also with the 3.9 V6. I don't have any modifications done on my truck as of yet and I get 18 City and between 20 and 22 on the highway.
I did notice if I use 87 Octaine gas my mpg decrease but if I stay with 89 Octaine. I am about to install the Super 40 Flowmaster cat back dual exhaust system which should give me between 1 to 2 mpg more. I will keep you posted.
