Subject: 5 speed towing IP: Logged
Message: I have a 02 SKT extended cab with 5 speed 3.9 v6. Towing guide says max is 3900 lbs with the 5 speed with 3.55 rear end. Same rig with an automatic the towing capacity jumps to 4700 lbs. I have several questions. 1. why is the tow cap. so much more with the auto? 2. What is the weak link and is there anything i can do to increase tow cap to auto rating ie. heavy clutch, 3.92 rear end etc etc. I have a class 3 hitch so thats not an issue but the boat i want to get is all told about 4500 lbs and the wife says i can get a boat but no kitchen pass for a new truck. thanks for any help

Message: I would suggest 3.92 gears, I noticed that makes a bit of a difference, for instance if you go to www.dodge.com and enter the numbers into the towing capacity calculator....
a 3.9L CC 4x4 Auto with 3.92s has a larger tow capacity than a 4.7L CC 4x4 Auto with 3.55 gears. Not a knock on a 4.7L, it is just an example of how the gears make a definite difference. Now look up a 4.7L with the 3.92s and it is about a 1,000lbs than the 3.9L with 3.92s.
When I bought my SXT CC 4x4 Auto, I told them I would be doing some towing, I have a travel trailer and a regular trailer I use to haul other stuff around. The travel trailer is 24' and is rated at 3450lbs and pulls fine. They suggested the 3.92 gears for what I was doing and I am glad they did.
