Attention owner's of 2000-2001 Quad Cab V6 3.9L 5 speed's.

There is currently a problem with this combination of engine/tranmission. At 2400 rpm the engine hesitates and some times back fires.

Here is how to test for this condition:

On a flat road with very few bumps, in first gear start to accelerate (as if driving a big rig pulling 10 tons) with out shifting before 3000 rpm. As the engine cross's over the 2300-2400 rpm range the engine will hesitate for just a brief second. It will feel as if you have been rear ended or as if some had turned the fuel off. Every now and then under the same conditions the engine will back fire in the headers do to un burnt fuel in the headers and valve over lap casing the fuel to be ignited in the headers.

Repeat this test several times to confirm the problem. This test is best performed with a cold engine on a cold morning. Although this problem is still there after driving on the highway for extended periods of time, but is much harder to detect.

I have had this problem being looked at almost since the truck was new, and the dealer, west coast service tech and Chrysler Engineering can not find out what the problem is. If you find (and you will) that you have this condition occuring with your truck please inform your local dealer and have them contact Chrysler Engineering informing them of the problem as well. The more complaints about this condition the sooner it will be resolved by Chrysler/Dodge.

Please post your results to this test and to the information that is given to you by your local dealer.

when the engine temp is fully cold it will hestitate and so will many of the v8's this is because when the engine is cold the truck is running rich, my 2001 3.9 has done this since i bought it and a cold air intake only makes it worse but mine is barely noticeable and goes fully away when the engine hits about 100 degrees but mine does not backfire though it will only hesitate a bit but i find if i hit the throttle just past that slow resting your foot on the throttle point it doesn't do it. MY suggestion is drive it like you stole it when it's cold and don't worry about it unless it's really something that bothers you ( well duh jay obviously it does or else he wouldn't have posted it ...hahahah) anyways there is a tsb on back firing at www.alldata.com but not much info there so get the tsb number and then call chrysler at 1-800-992-1997 and they can tell you what the tsb says and if they can't then take that tsb # to your local library and get it there because tsb's are public knowledge they are not a secret that car companies hide from you. hope this helps some

Thanks Jay I'll check into that ........ and oh hay it does bug me (hahaha) Oh ya. They have had the co-pilot hooked up to it as well with nothing ever showing up. I have gotten notice from Chrysler and they do admit that there is a problem there, just don't know what to do to fix it.

I have read many posts on this suggesting everything from spark plugs, to cleaning TB, to adjusting TPS. This truck is under warranty. I have had it less than a year and has 15,000 miles. What do I tell the dealer to get this fixed? I have had it there several times, but they don't know how to fix it. Please help! It is driving me crazy and giving me wiplash!

just to add to the mix here....I have a 3.9L and I experience the exact same thing everytime I start the truck. Hesitates real bad at about 2500rpm. Like you said, almost feels like something is physically stopping the truck for a second. Goes away as soon as the engine heats up.

Hey guys, same exact problem, seems to be worse with the manual 3.9's. mine has been to the dealer 3 times and they say that there is nothing that they can do, it is a characteristic of that engine. seems worse on cold days of course, but still is evident on warmer days too. they let me drive a brand new 5spd and bam, same exact thing. they think that if they all do it then it is normal. i beg to differ. i've tried everything, plugs, cold air verses stock, TPS sensor adjust, nothing will fix it!!!! And chrysler is a bunch of lazy asses, i had an avenger the first year they came out and all kinds of problems, they took it back under lemon law. I'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem. Why the hell did I buy another dodge????????

My 99 Dakota 3.9L v6 club cab 2wd has done exactly the same thing at 2400rpm since brand new. Only when cold, and exactly at 2400rpm.

What is the fix???? Obviously this is a common problem, has DC admitted to it yet?

I have the exact same problem with my 2000 v6 5 speed manual Dak, more noticible when its cold.
I have tried everthing to remedy to no aval,dealer cant find anything wrong.
Does any one know if this has been reported to DM yet?I have another apointment with another dealer on Fri, I will bring all the info you guys have reported and see if they can reort it to engineering.
All we can do at this point is keep reporting it to them until somthing is done.

I have the same problem.
Early morning 35 mph truck sputters, backfires and jolts until the 2-3 RPM needle drops to 1 RPM and the truck downshifts (auto tran).

I am on dealer vist # 3 and have accumulated documentation along the way. I had a similar problem with a Jeep Grd Cher and I traded it in to get rid of the problem (almost 10 visits to service with no results). Almost caught an 18-wheeler when the Jeep lost RPMs going up a dangerous hill.

My problem is this: Every time the Dodge goes in with the problem, Dodge svc reps fix the problem for ~3 months when it always returns worse.
I think they know that the fix is bad and refuse to do so under warranty. I will go after them legally within 2-3 more vists and try to get my money back.

Any advice would be great. I like the truck otherwise but fear for my safety in the $#@(*^ thing.

i have a 1999 dakota that i have done various things to and i have the same problem. the only way to fix this is to ethier have the dealer flash the computer which will problbly not permanitly fix the problem but might help for a while or wait until chrysler comes up with a new flash program that will change the fuel map/timing curve but as stated in one of the previous posts this wont happen unless you tell your dealer to call chrysler about the problem thats all i can tell you right now

I have the same problem, but I'm told it's not in the computer. When the engine cold the computer is in what they call "closed loop" (or open, I
can't remember which). This means that there are no corrections being made by the computer. When the engine warms up and the computer starts making
it's adjustments, the hesitation is gone. In spite of that I had my dealer replace the computer with a brand new one with absolutely no
change - hesitation is still there.

is true computer is in closed loop when cold but the computer has a factory installed fuel and igntion map that the engine uses at a set degree this problem is progressively worse as temps drop outside the factory has for some reason choosen to run the motor a little on the rich side problobly do to easeir start up in the cold winter air. on other problem i have incountered with my 99 is that will crusing at a set speed the truck will surge like the computer is unsure of where the tps is at. im not downing dodge ilove mine to death and will problobly drive it until i die or i cant fix it anymore but if there is a weak link in the dakota v6 i would have to say that the computer has a very slow prosseser.
these are just my thoughts though

Well now .. actually it is in open loop. The o2 sensor is not being used to perform closed loop feedback control. and thus, like you said, it is using the basic fuel and timing map using the input sensors with no regards to if they are actually right or not. I am going to assume that like other vehicles I've dealt with that it will use the current long term trim values to offset those input sensors.

But once the o2 sensor is heated up the ecu should go into closed-loop mod even with the water temp below optimum. That is a big deal for EPA/OBD2 compliance because open loop tends to be rather rich and catalytic converters can only handle so much unburnt hydrocarbons. Worse if a bunch is allowed to build up before they reach light off temp you rish a cat fire. This is why the sensors have heaters to get them running and the ecu into closed-loop mod as fast as possible.

Your comment about the TPS is interesting because something I noticed on mine was that before and after adjusting it (a la speedtweeks) I was getting at most a 77% TPS signal with the throttle WOT. That is both pushing the pedal and manually opening the throttle plate. But I guess so long as the ECU "learns" that that is the max throttle position [shrug]. I've just never seen a car (mostly imports) not show 100% throttle nor have a closed throttle position switch which I haven't seen on this bad boy.

Hi all. I'm an owner of a 2001 Dakota Sport. It has the 3.9, regular cab, 2wd, and 5 speed manual. I tried what you guys suggested to see if I had the same problem. I may be one of the lucky few but I did not experience any problems at all at approximately 2400 RPM, or any RPM. In fact, I get more power at that RPM. The revs pick up the acceleration increases. The only mods I have done are a 2 chamber Flowmaster, Airaid intake, and a Poweraid throttle body spacer. Is there anyone else who hasn't had this problem?

has anyone had this problem with v-6 automatic transmission?because i just purchased a 01 seemed to be doing what you just described i just changed cap,rotor ,plugs and wires seems to have went away.hope it doesn't return.
