Subject: Tailgate Rubbing IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a new 2003 Dakota and have used it a couple times to carry a couple sheets of plywood with the tailgate down. The black bumper guard on top of the bumper has rubbed two lines onto my tailgate. The weight of the plywood wasn't even on the tailgate. I will say something to the dealer, but I know he will probably say it is my fault. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? I also have rust spots on both bumpers. It seems that there may be a problem with the bumpers. Thanks for the help.

Message: Your bumper needs to be adjusted. When I bought my 99 my tailgate rested on my bumper. There are two bolts on each side of the bumper that can be loosened to adjust the tailgate up and down.
Since your truck is a 2003 I would bring it to the dealer and tell them to adjust the bumper, and also to fix the paint damage. It is not your fault the bumper was not on correctly in the first place.

Message: As far as rust spots on both bumpers, I don't actually know what you could do about that... I'm sure they would say that its common wear-and-tear on the part, and it would cost you money to get fixed if its a big problem... Surface rust comes off of the chrome very easily when you scrub it with a steel wool pad, or something of that texture, so try that first...

Message: If you have a small amount of rust on chrome....
Rub it with a crumbled up piece of alumniun foil....You will be surprized at the results....You DO NOT WANT TO RUB IT WITH ANY THING OF TEXTURE!!!!!!

Danny's right, light rust on chrome cleans up well. Do not use anything harsh to clean the bumpers. A soft sponge usually takes care of the rust that accumulates around the hole where the hitch ball goes.

Message: Worked fine for me... I didnt mean scrub the hell out of it... lol If you lightly go over it with a steel wool pad it works fine... but if something softer works too, That would be what I would use, to eliminate risk... But my trucks older, and it had a bit more rust, so I figured the only thing good enough to do the job would be a steel pad... because if it rubbed of some chrome I wouldnt mind, but it didnt...

P.S. I guess, now that I think about it, if I had a newer truck I probably would use something soft.
