Subject: Engine Idle issue, very confused... IP: Logged
Message: Ok, '97 V6 CC... Just got a Magnaflow exhaust Car Sound Cat and new pipe... Also put in the 180 themostat...
Anywhoo it seems that when it is first started it runs fine but after you stop go shopping or whatever and try to start it up it will not idle right... If I keep the gas going for a little while it eventually will run... If you let off the gas the idle drops down to 400rpm and dies...
What could this be? Something with the fuel system like filters pumps and such?
Thanks in advance,
BigB

Message: I had a similar problem when I tried the 180* t-stat, truck would run fine when I started it then after 15-20 min. when you would think it was warmed up it would sputter around like it was running cold, it even smelled rich. I let go like this for about 400 miles then I removed the 180* t-stat, the very next time I started the truck it ran fine and has every since.
My theory about the situation was that the engine exhaust was not hot enough to make the o2 sensors work right ?????
The only thing you could try if you haven't done it in awhile is clean the TB and IAC and see if that helps any.

Message: Once it is going it is fine... even at a stop light and such... just after I turn it off it does not want to start... So after it cools down it starts just fine again...
2.5" exhaust single pipe... I put a new front 02 sensor in not too long ago... When I got the new exhaust in they dropped the pipe with the second sensor not sure if it hurt it or not...
I can try the thermostat since it is easy and cheap...

Message: Check two more things, check your IAC soleniod, and check or replace your coolent temp. sensor, that might help might not, but i dont think the coolent temp. sensor is too expensive.

Message: I noticed today when stopeed at a light (i have a 5spd) that my idle would every once in awhile rev up by about 300 rpms like i was stepping on the gas but i wasnt. Anybody know anything about this? It was cold out and i had started the truck only about 6 min before if it makes any difference.

your truck sounds like my 4-wheeler. a Yamaha Blaster. it would start and run for hours, but if I turned it off or stalled it off it wouldn't start until it was cool again. good luck, keep my posted as to what you find out.

Message: Hi folks. Keepin the TB, IAC, even the injectors cleaned out helps keep idle smooth. Im currently workin on a slight stumble at idle. Ive cleaned everything out I could, including taking the injectors out and soaking them, still a little stumble. Never had a reving or stall tho. Also keeping the wires, plugs and dist rotor serviced helps. As far as the 02 sensors, you need both of them for the computer to work right. Lot of people forget that we have a 239 V6 engine, not a V8 and go nuts with mods. Thats not nessacarily good, ull actually loose power with too much flow out. You need a certain amount of backpressure in the engine to maintain power, it was designed to work that way. I did a lot of research before I put a new cat back on. Even drove around with the exhaust disconnected from the cat foward for a little while. That resulted in loss of power and fuel milage. Anyway to cover all the questions, it could be a number of things causing a stall BigB, but I wouldnt mess with the engine temp components or modify the exhaust too much or run into problems such as the ones ure having now. Only thing I can suggest is to put back a standard thermostat, so that the engine can build the temp it was designed to run at and add the second O2 sensor its now missing. 1 upstream and 1 downstream, the computer requires that so it knows how much fuel to deliver to the injectors, etc. Hope this helped, let me know how u make out. Good Luck!!

Message: I agree with Jake. If the only mod you've done to your truck is the exaust, i'd put that stock thermistat back in. The only time you should mess with that thermistat is if you install a performance computer in your truck that requires it. Your stock computer sends out information to your motor based on stock parts. You can change things like your thermistat, but your computer still thinks you have a stock one in it. You can't do one mod without the other. That's just like your exaust. It probably hasn't changed your trucks performance enough to really notice. However, if you were to put an intake on it, combined with a performance computer or module, you would be getting the best performance out of all three because they all work hand in hand. One with out the other is like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with out the bread!

Message: Hey, thanks for all the info...
I have a K&N air intake and the new cat because the old one was shot and new exhaust for the same reason. Dropped the exhaust down from dual out of the muffler to single. As for the 02 sensor I have two still just one was on the old pipe and when the guy was taking it out he did not disconnet the sensor so when the pipe came out it did not fully fall to the ground because the wire held it in place. He did remove it and reinstalled it on the new pipe. I have noticed a lot more power from the engine and quicker times from 0-60 but not much with gas mileage... The only problem so far was the idle issue on the second start but all is gone after reinstalled the plugs and wires...
I will keep you all updated...
