Message: Has anyone mechanically inclined on this board ever heard that if your auto tranny fluid has never been changed to NOT change it due to "buildup of some sort of lacquer". Let me know

Message: Just a comment - my '87 V6 2WD has 180k on it. Had it serviced 4 times (every ~45k) and it's had no problems with fairly heavy use on the original tranny.

Message: That "rumor" is absolutely true. Happened to me personally. Had the transmission fluid changed @ 100,000 miles and it had obviously never been changed before. 3 days later the tranny totally went out. Had to buy another one and it cost me $600 installed. (Bought a used tranny out of a junkyard)
What happens (now that I know) is that the new transmission fluid has a much stronger detergent (compared to the old used tranny fluid) and it begins to break up any dirt, film etc. that has built up over the years and then circulates all that trash through the whole system, resulting in major failure to the tranny pump and clutches.
I personally will NEVER make that mistake again and just leave it alone. But, you can roll the dice and go for it if you feel lucky, cause I've also heard of people getting away with it. You just never know.
Good luck,
Jeff

Message: MY '99 has just shy of 17,000 on it. Do you know when the limit for this is? Should I be rushing out to change the transmission fluid or should I be signing it off?

Message: Keep in mind that my previous post just pertains to those that have high mileage on their trannys and never changed the fluid, or bought a truck used with high mileage and aren't sure of the maintenance history of it. That is when you start rolling the dice. I'd say chances are 50/50 of trashing it.
But, regular maintenance every 20-25K is a very good idea, especially if you plan on keeping your truck for a long time.

Message: I just bought my 93 with 130K on it. I was thinking about changing the fluid but now I'm not sure. What if I change it and then run it and then change the fluid again the next day before it has much of a chance to do much damage?? Any thought???

Message: Hmmm, you could try it. I know that some shops can do a tranny backflush. Not sure about that either though. I'm just a little skeptical because of my personal experience with this, especially after the guys at the Quick Lube place telling me I had nothing to worry about. Ya..whatever. Talked to them about it over the phone after my tranny bit the dust and then they said, well...these things can happen. Gee thanks for tellin' @sshole!
