I know somebody posted a similar problem below with a van, but my problem is a little different. I started the truck yesterday, still in pursuit of where the hell the exhaust is leaking, I let it warm up, but this time, after it warmed up, the oil pressure dropped quite a bit, I revved it up, and the oil pressure went up, but came down as soon as I let off, it HAD pressure, just low. I put it in drive and the oil pressure dropped more, signa,ing the oil light, and it alm ost died but then kicked back up and ran fine, so I put it back in park and it went down so i revved it some more, only this time, when the oil pressure rose, black smoke came out of the tailpipe when it reved about 1500RPM's. So I shut it off... Now today, it warmed up and did fine like usual. The oil pressure seemed to stay about normal. At first i thought maybe a busted piston ring or somethign serious, but after today, maybe just the oil pump is on its last mile? There is an oil leak that has been there since i bought it, and im fixing that now, but that might account for the black smoke, I'm kinda lookin for some more opinions... what do you guys think?
Sad as it is, If the engine needs rebuilt, theres a chance I will sell the truck, because I'm kind of on a tight budget and I am kind of restricted on time (I do the work myself.) I just bought an 84 Camaro w/ a 305 HO that needs some work, and if the dak needs serious work like that, I'll have to choose between one of them... and C'mon... High output guys! That car hauls ass! lol, I don't know, I'll figure it out, at any rate, I'd sure miss my truck.

You need to do an onboard diagnostic check to see if any Fault Codes show up regarding the oil pressure. Go here and follow the directions:

I was driving down the road in my 1999 dodge dakota and my oil pressure went to 0 and then I gave it gas and it went back up and then back down to 0 so I put a new oil pump in it and it still is going back to 0 after the motor warms up.. I have called the corporation and no help there it has 125,000 miles. it jumped time at 80,000 miles and I don't know why. I think someone needs to get off there ass and fix these problems do you think the dodge brothers would let all these problems happen no. they didn't care about the money it was about the motors they put there heart and sole in there work and you people don't care what happends. did the power of money get in the way well it must be nice because I still owe about 5,000 dollars and for a peace of crap .....................

I called auto zone and they said that the truck didn't have a oil sending unit does it I know nothing about that motor I just know that the oil pump is working because I don't lose pressure till it gets warm I did replace the oil filter so if it has a oil sending unit can you explain where it is ? Thank you

On my 93, the sending unit is behind the throttle body right next to the distributor cap and its very easy to change out(buy the deep dish socket for this if you don't already have one) I can't remember the size socket but auto zone can look it up on their computer for you. I just posted this same problem with my truck last week and by changing the oil filter(oil only has 1000mi on it) and that sending unit, my trucks pressure is good again. This is cheap stuff to do and may solve your problems or at least tell you if you need to have the oil pan dropped and more labor intensive work done. Go with the larger oil filter that the '88 318 v8 engines used. This is Larry's suggestion and it also gives a slightly higher pressure with more flow.

ALL trucks/cars have a oil sending unit,thats what makes the gauge or numb light work,
so the person at auto zone might want to that a course in automotive.
try some place else,carquest,napa etc
matt its in the back of the motor on 3.9s,5.2s,5.9s by the dist like Budysr said.

can you maybe tell me what it looks like? I don't know what I am looking for. From you guys I might know where it is but I don't know what I am looking for it is my first time working on anything . I am only 20 and don't have the money to have someone else fix it or I would but I am learning saves money ............

you can't miss it. kinda hex shaped, right next to the distributor where it goes into the motor. got 1 wire plugged in to it, dead center.

pass side,next to dist,only thing besides the bolts that screws into the motor block,1 or 2 wire plug,about 3" tall

idiot light is on for the oil pressure in a 99 dakota v6 3.9L. i am in school for mechanics but on break right now. any at home tests i can perform to pinpoint the problem?
