Subject: auto tranny wont shift IP: Logged
Message: it's been really cold this week and in the morning when i leave work my tranny wont shift out of 2nd gear for at least a couple of miles. this has happend twice in two days and what i end up doing is pulling over and give my tv cable a couple of quick tugs. after i do that it'll shift but really hard and only only after about another mile of driving. has this happened to any one else and if so what caused it. i visited my dealership after the second time this happend and with out lookin at it they seem to think that a new tranny would fix the problem. "duh". any help would be great. thanks

Message: First thing to do would be to check the tranny fluid and change it if its dirty. Second make sure the tv cable is properly adjusted.
If it is an internal trans problem the only thing the dealer will do is replace the entire unit. You would have to go to a tranny shop or independant garage if you want them to actually fix the tranny.

Message: muddak,
The computer won't allow the transmission to shift into the higher gears until its reached a certain temperature. I guess it prevents possible damage. There's not much you can do about it, except warm it up more before you drive it. Hope this helps.

Message: my 97 3.9 does the same thing when it is cold. sometimes i get an occasional slip when it's cold too. i checked my fluid, and it was a little low, after filling to proper level it seemed to help. I also changed my fluid and filter, and put some lucas transmission gunk in it, and i have noticed a considerable improvement. hope this helps you.

Message: The computer won't let it shift into overdrive when it gets below a certain temp. It doesn't prevent 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts. Only 3-4 when really cold. You probably need a tranny overhaul. My 99 would do the same thing you're describing with only 40,000 miles on it. Dealer said i needed a whole new one. Took it to independant shop and was told it needed an overhaul. Said the internal seals, among other things, suck on dodge autos and when they wear out, they mess up cold shifts until they warm up and expand. Said dodge has been trying to get these seals right for a decade and can't seem to do it. Lord knows why.I tried dicking with the tv cable and linkage but no luck. Hopefully, thats all thats wrong with yours(tv cable related).Overhaul was 1100 bucks. My tranny is a 42RE.

Message: One thing about trany's. The fluid will drain from the torque converter into the trany pan when it sits for a couple days. Try this trick. While you are waiting for the truck to warm up, put the shifter in nuetral. This will fill the converter house in 30 seconds. You should slip right into gear provided you are up to level and clean. Also note: a dirty and clogged filter can cause this problem. It's a cheep easy fix that may work for you. On second thought it is not that easy keeping the garage floor clean when changing the trany filter. It is kind of a $hity job, isn't it?

Message: thanks for all of your help. i got it fixed (did it my self). the proble was that the tv cable was not retracting when you accelerate so the trann thought you were always in passing gear. a little lock deicer and wd40 took care of the problem. its been cold and wet here in maine for a month or two now and some moisture must of gotten into the area of where the tv cable attaches to the tranny. i plan on having the tranny flushed and filled with atf 4 after christmas. once again you guys and girl(s) saved the day.
