Subject: JBA headers vs. stock intake manifold IP: Logged
Message: Recently replaced my 5 year old stock manifold with a JBA header... definitely worth it!
I am glad that this ugly rusty piece of steel is out of my car:

Message: I put JBA ceramic headers on my '02 V6 about a month or so ago. As far as an upgrade in performance goes...I can't tell, even with a high performance muffler. But, I didn't install the headers solely for the reason of improving the performance. I wanted to get those heavy, ugly, stud breaking old manifolds off before they caused me more problems. I went with the ceramic headers so that they wouldn't turn blue, and because they tend to keep temperatures down a bit. I'm looking to see a benefit from the headers when I get my F&B throttle body, MSD wires, intake, and 1.7 roller rockers installed.
I got the headers from truckperformance.com when they were offering free shipping a while back. I almost ordered them from Speedtweaks, but I was starting to hear some negative things about them at that time, so I opted on the side of caution...now, I'm glad that I did.

Message: Troy: the headers were $ 500.- and I got them from http://www.wyckoff-mopar-parts.com. Performance result is difficult to say, since I did not dyno the truck. It is definitely more responsive and has got a nice low rumble (with Gibson dual exhasut). I just installed a new TB as well, so performance is getting better as the PCM seems to learn the new situation.
I can totally agree with Pistolero, it is just a good thing to get those old manifolds out of the truck. Only problem I had was one broken stud... I left it and have the JBA held by three bolts on the passenger side.

Message: Andy, your driving missing one stud on your headers? I'm totally surprised it's not leaking. I had to change out one stud on both sides due breakage. I tried to drive around with only three studs and both sides started leaking bad. Only thing you can due is drill out the studs and replace. I used a helicoil kit. Haven't had any problems since. I haven't even had the bolts get loose were the studs were replaced. You're a first as far as not getting a leaky header with three bolts. Greg

Message: Greg, yes, I am driving around like that. I put in a lot of heat resistant sealant along with the JBA gasket and I cannot see any leaking. I hasn't been leaking before with the stock manifold either. I was planning to drill the stud out... but I am told that's not really easy to do...

Message: that stud is hardend but not super hard, usually it will test 40/45 Rockwell "C" scale. Use cobalt or tic coated drills and make sure they are sharp. If you have never sharpened a drill, ask a local machine shop (industrial, not automotive) to do it for you. Some might. Just a few kind words from a toolmaker with 30+ years in the trade. Also you may need to rent or borrow a "right angle" drill as space under there is rather limited.

Thanks for the tips. Maybe I can summon enough courage to deinstall the JBA again and drill that stud out. Seems to be good challenge for some rainy weekend.
