Subject: Locating this darn noise!

Need help locating the source of a snapping noise coming from right rear axle when brake pressure is applied. It will disappear when shoes are tight on drum. When the self-adjuster needs to adjust the shoes the snapping noise sounds like something really major is ready to break. Pulled the rear drum today & checked the shoes. They appeared fine. Checked for axle bearing play & seen about 1/16” up/down or forward/reverse play. The brakes have about 12k miles on them & the noise has been occurring all this time. New springs, adjusters, & drums were turned..

Thanks for the suggestions…..

Just a thought. The axle play doesn't seem to be excessive but then again I'm not there actually seeing it. You said the noise disappears when the shoes are tight on the drum. Does this noise occur everytime you apply the brakes? Does forward or reverse motion make a difference in the noise you are hearing? Who did the last rear brake job? Were all components assembled properly and in the correct order? I'm not trying to be argumentative, just looking for more information. I've seen the tension springs installed incorrectly (eg: backwards, wrong spring on top of the other, etc.) and causing noises like you're talking about. I've also seen adjuster cables installed incorrectly causing noises and other problems as well. If you're positive everything was assembled properly and in the correct order, have you considered checking the torque on the wheel backing plate bolts? This would be the plate the brake shoes ride on. If the plate is loose, it's possible that could be the source of the noise you're describing.

Thanks for the response….This noise has to go!!

I bought this vehicle w/126k on the odometer. Had to put in new shoes then. The previous owner did no maintenance on this truck. It was just about ready for the bone yard….Needless to say the brakes were cooked, I have never seen a set this bad. The return springs were distorted, the emergency brake link spring was broken, the brake cyl was leaking, & drum was egg shape. Only items original now is the backing plate & drum.

The backing plate is tight, the only thing unusual was the friction blocks where the shoes contact it were wavy. This weekend I will lightly grinding them flat. Could this wave be preventing the shoes from adjusting???

This snapping noise is heard with each revolution of the tire. It is only present when the shoes need adjusting. If I step on the brakes hard & they adjust the noise disappears….

The shoes, springs & cable are all installed correctly. Double checked it already this week against the Factory Tech Manual & various websites…

I agree the axle play is expected for the mileage….

Any thoughts???

Daksport,
I'm not too sure what the noise could be on your truck, as I'm not that familar with dropped vehicles. I would suggest that you try inspecting all front suspension components and also steering system components. I think I saw something about a front end noise during turns in the TSB listing and I think there is a procedure to correct it that you can do at home. Failing that, even though your truck has been lowered, isn't it still under the 3yr warranty? You might consider taking it to the dealer and having them look at it.

Sigma,

If the backing plate is tight, then it's not the source of the noise. When you work on the brakes, unless you can see definite wear grooves in the shoe slides, I don't think I would grind them even lightly. I would make sure that before the shoe was re-installed, the contact points on the backing plate was lubed with white lithium grease. You said the drum was still original and was egg shaped. Think this might have something to do with it? Another suggestion might be to let the truck start making the noise, and instead of a hard brake application to stop the noise, baby them. get it home or to your shop and tear the brake apart and see what looks out of place. Also, you could try swapping the drum to the other side and see if the noise moves with the drum. At the very least, this would identify or eliminate the drum as the source of the noise. Let me know how this comes out, you've got my curiosity up now.

Dakota39M- nope its the stock suspension thats on it now. havent got around to putting the kit on. I had a look and it seems to be coming from or around a big round rubber bushing kind of looking thing around the same area under the truck.

Thanks

Quick update on this snapping noise in case someone else has trouble....

Thanks Dakota39M for the idea of switching drums, after doing it the noise was still there.

At this point I found a steep hill & applied the emergency brake will I was doing about 40 down it. No noise was heard, I was chasing the wrong axle. It turned out to be the right front axle generating this snapping noise. Checked the bearings, they were fine. Mic'd the rotor, it was within spec for thickness variation. Used a dial indicator checking for warpage, that too was within the specs. Took closer look at the pads & the caliper adapter bracket. Noticed wear on the edge of adapter bracket where the pad was striking the bracket. It had actually wore dimples approx .030 deep into the bracket. As the pad was grabbing the rotor it was spinning & striking the adapter bracket. After installing a new bracket my Dak is noise free......

Thanks for all the ideas.....

daksport,im not sure if these trucks have torsion bars but if they do you might check the rubber mounts.they usually will make a popping sound.

maybe you should read more carefully before you post a thread making fun of others. Dakota39M was talking to Daksport who has a 2000 dakota which would be covered by a 3 year warranty!!! Way to stick your foot in your mouth and look like a fool!!!!!!!!!
