Subject: Chronic plenum gasket failure? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 V-6 Dakota that had severe pinging problems within a month of buying it new. First they changed the plenum gasket, which helped alot, then they re-programmed the computer about a year later when the flash update for the computer supposedly became available. That stopped the ping entirely. Now, almost 2 years later, it is starting to ping again. Not badly, yet, but its slowly getting worse. I assume the flash can't "wear off" over time so could my plenum gasket be starting to leak again?? Once they're replaced the first time, is it common for them to leak again sometime down the road? Any pointers would be very helpfull. Thanks........

Message: From my understanding the plenum gaskets blow out because the bolts holding the plenum plate to the bottom of the intake are too far apart. Eventually the engine vacuum/pressure will blow out a portion of the gasket. There are several places that sell "Plenum gasket reinforcement kits", which look like they would work.

Message: Speedtweaks and Hughs, I think, have better replacement pans and reinforcement kits. I used the 1/4 inch aluminum pan on mine. Looks good and should last.
