Subject: Are the MODS really worth it? IP: Logged
Message: OK folks, been lurking around the boards here for a few months learning all about what to do and what not to do to my Dak.
I've got a 2000 3.9L SLT CC. So far all I have done is put in 3923's with Borg Warner wires, cap and rotors as part of a long overdue tune-up at 36K miles.
I have planned on ordering the following next week:
* Intense Performance Intake
* Gibson Dual Sport Exhaust
* V8 TB
and of course, relocating the IAT at the time of the intake install.
Now here's my question - after I spend close to $600 on all this will I really see a dramatic difference, or will it just be small gains? I'm really wondering if spending $100 for a V8 TB that is 2-4mm bigger is really worth it.
My concern lies from spending over $400 2 years ago on a clutch pack and pipe for my ATV that everyone on another board told me would be so great and the gains were minimal at best - not really worth all the $ and effort.
Thanks!
Tim

Message: Your biggest seat of the pants gain will be with the V8 TB.
There have been a few and I mean very few on here who have installed V8 TB's and didnt notice a gain or much but I can tell you that is one of the best mods ever for a V6 mag.
As for the other mods, the intake will help get more air in that V8 TB but I dont think it will give you much as far as feeling performane.
Now the IAT, some have seen big gains from it and some very little or none. I can tell you mine feels quite a bit stronger when its warmed up after I relocated it, its a free mod so go for it.
Good luck and I hope this helped.

Message: I think you picked the best mods for budget performance there. If you want maximum bang for bear minimum buck, though, you could get the V8 tb, make your own intake, and just buy the muffler. That would run you ... $50 tb, $50 intake, $80 for a aluminized Gibson Superflow. That's only around $200 shipped. W/o mandrel bending behind the Gibson you might keep a little more restriction, though.
Just a thought or two.

Message: Thanks for your input Faz and Zaurusman.
Clay - the IAT sensor is the Intake Air Temperature sensor and is located on the #2 intake rudder on the 3.9's. (sort of behind the alternator if I remember right). A lot of guys relocate this sensor to the air intake tube. The idea is that you get a more accurate temp reading of the incoming air. Reading cooler air will allow the computer to make better timing and air/fuel adjustments thus gaining a few hp's. I hope I explained it correctly anyways....
You can go to speedtweaks.net and click on the link for Tips and Tricks - they have notes on how to relocate as well as a lot of other useful info. to learn.

Message: 2kblue, you explained it very accuratly. I noticed that mostly while crusing down the interstate and go to pass someone, way more responsive. I didnt "feel" it at low wend. I agree with Zaurusman, deff spend the $ on the muffler and throttle body. I kinda built a home CAI and didnt nottice alot of gain, but it was parts around the house, it fit good, and looked nice, so I kept it. I felt quite a bit out of putting a power crank pully on mine from aspracing.com, well worth the money I think. I dont plan on putting any large electronics on it, so thats not a prob. Just my $.02

Message: Dale, you ever, say, sit at the park for an hour eating a Big Mac and catching up on paperwork with your Dak idling and air running with that crank and not experience any problems? Inquiring minds want to know, because that's what's keeping me from one.

Message: Nope, I always go in and eat. And I dispise drive thru's. I do not over heat one bit in traffic, and I do not have a bit of charging problems. Sorry if I offended you, I just told the man(person) my opinion.

Message: Guess I'll keep that mod back burner then; thanks. Odd you didn't notice an improvement from your cold air; really woke mine up in the winter. Extra noise didn't hurt either. :-)

Message: I think its still sucking in hot air from engine compartment. I want to redo it, but I have to get the wifes "new" car insured and registered, and get the 8-link rear end I just bought for my show truck, then its back to the dodge.

Message: Dale - You remove the clutch fan and use an electric fan when you install the underdrive pulley correct? If so, can a similar gain be achived by changing pulley size and keeping the fan?
Just curious, something I've looked at as well but going without that fan worries me a little.

Message: Nope, Didn't touch the fan at all. Cept with the back of my hand banging it while taking them 6 1/2" bolts off the crank. It's just a smaller diameter. My truck, 97 part # asp504500 69.95 (www.aspracing.com, then street pullys, then dodge) plus you have to buy a 6 rib belt (not stock 7 rib) like 94.5" long (dont quote me on the length). Bolts on in about an hour. You dont have to take the center bolt off!!!!
