Subject: Oxygen Sensor IP: Logged
Message: I just failed inspection and was told that the oxygen sensor was most likely the problem. This wouldn't surprise me because the check engine light has been on and the truck has 115,000 miles.
My question is this: Can a bad oxygen sensor cause rough idleing? My truck idles real rough often when it is in drive and I'm holding the break. Rather than risk it stalling I shift to park or neutral and the engine will rev for a second or two. It seems to do alright if left in park or neutral although it does idle rough in park too.
Can a bad oxygen sensor cause this to happen? Probably not but I'm just hoping to get two problems done at once.

Message: i had to get my oxygen sensor replaced last year, but i didn't have the rough idling. My guess would be that its something else.

Message: The oxygen sensor should be replaced every 60k mile more or less. Ruff idle, try cleaning the valve on the back of the throttle body. Remove and clean carefully with carb cleaner. Dirty injectors will also make it idle ruff. Try and run some injector cleaner through the tank at next fillup. Try and see if it helps.

Message: I don't know about the Dodge. But I do know on a Ford if the oxygen sensor goes bad it'll make the engine idle rough. If it was me I would say it's the oxygen sensor that is causing your problems.

Message: It is the front O2 sensor. I've already replaced the PCV valve - it was ok anyway. I used injector cleaner in my last tank of gas with no effect. It can't be the engine mounts because it gets progressively worse and sounds like it will stall. Also, it misses occasionally while driving. Thanks for the ideas though.

Message: Yeah - I've already thought of that. I haven't checked them yet. I figure that is most likely the problem. I was just wondering whether or not the 02 sensor could cause the problems. I just got the truck a few weeks ago so I'm not sure when everything was last changed.

Message: The O2 sensor could cause a rough idle, but it isn't the only thing. The PCM uses the first O2 sensor to adjust air/fule mixture to 14% for best performance/mileage. The second O2 sensor tells the PCM if the cat is doing its job correctly, but is not used to calculate air/fuel mixture. Both sensors are the same type. If I were you I would change the Cap, Rotor, Spark plugs and wires, and do a throttle body cleaning. That is basic maintainence anyway, so you wouldn't be wasting money or parts. If you still have troubles then go deeper. It is true the O2 sensor OEM's recommend replacing them every 60K miles, but they get pricey.
