Message: I have talked about this before but I want to make sure I know what I am about to do. I have a 1990 Dak, 2wd, 3.9L V6. I already have a home brew cold air intake, a custom dual flowmaster exhaust, and next week I will have a set of Edlebrock headers on.
Now to my question. I am going to cut the CAT off my Dak. I have been told by many Dak owners that Gen I daks have a very restrictive honeycomb Cat element. So I am going to cut it out and weld a piece of exhaust pipe in. What type of performance gain can I expect? What type of gas milage increase? I have heard a 1.5-2 mpg. And does it effect the sound of the truck?
I am not worried about emissions testing due to the fact that my area has none. Sorry to all you green peace people! Thaks for any info you can give me.
Have a good Turkey Day. Joe E.

Message: I have a 95 2WD 3.9L V6 to which I did most the same things you have inquired about. I had a modified intake and a Dynomax high flow exhaust, then I put in a high flow Cat (rather than just eliinate it). What I found is that the sound does not get any better, just louder. And although the air flow is much better, there's barely enough back pressure to come down from a high rev without spitting. So I would think that removing the Cat completely would give way too little back pressure and you would be unhappy with the result.

Message: I have a 97 dakota and dont tell anyone but i took my truck to the shop and they cut off my cat and put a flowmaster with dual exhaust.I actually cleaned out my cat. before i went there and it echoed like a B TCH so they put a pipe through it and now it sounds sweet and ive gained power, acceleration, and about 3MPG more, when i rev it up it sounds loud and also awsome and by having my dual 3" chrome tips coming out the back at 45s it makes my truck look mo better and no it looks like it has TWO Balls instead of one.lol so i reccomend it atleast thats my taste.LATERS

Message: Yea i put a high flow cat on my truck as well.. and thats all thats on thier.. no muffler.. as of yet.. no time.. And when slowing down.. now i have a 5 speed so i can play around a bit more.. slowing down you get alot of spittin and what sounds like Backfiring .. Its loud sometimes.. so you might not wanna get a high flow.. or remove it..
