Message: I was lookin yesteray at how easy, or hard it would be to change out my stock t-stat to a 180 degree. It looks like a pain in the ford. Is it really that difficult to do with just a shade tree machanics education? What all is involved, about how long does it take, and what is the hardes thing to do on the replacement?

Message: it's easy as hell to do under your tree. just unattach the hose from the radiator, drain the fluid, remove the bolts, pull up on the housing (a bit of a pain) and remove the t-stat. it takes a total of 10-15 minutes (unless you're like me and lose one of the bolts).

Gabe is right; its a snap to change out. Here is what I did:
1. Removed the bolt to the alternator support bracket. This bolt is on the manifold and slightly to left above the thermostat housing.
2. Moved the bracket (5" staight black bar)slighly to the left (makes more room).
3. Unbolted the thermostat housing with hose attached and let the small amount of coolant spill out (will not hurt a thing).
4. Cleaned the area with some paper towels.
5. Scraped off the old gasket from the thermostat housing and cleaned with scrub pad.
6. Scraped off the remains of the old gasket from the engine block with and scubbed with pad.
7. Tap the old thermostat with a screw driver and hammer to loosen; it was stuck.
8. Removed old thermostat, checked again for cleanliness, and placed in new thermo.
9. Placed new gasket, re-attached thermo housing and tightened.
10.Re-attached and tightened support bracket.
11.Refill resevoir tank; very little was needed for mine.
This take about 10 minutes, with most of your time going to scraping the old gasket off. I think my dealer used RVT sealant for a leak I had a couple of months ago. This made scraping off the old gasket plus sealant a REAL pain!
