Subject: Spark Plug Wires Help!!! IP: Logged
Message: Can you put the wrong spark plug wire on the wrong spark plug. I always just matched the old with the new but wonder if there is an easier way. If you misplace them what happens. Which is the best to get for v6 dakota and cap and rotor. I assume that autolite 3923 plugs are the best plugs to get.

Message: yes if you get them in the wrong place the engine won't run at all or maybe a little and cause even more problems it should go like this for a 3.9 (that is for a 2000 model anyways)
( CAP)
-------------6*-------5*
----------1*--coilwire*--4
-------------2*-------3*
(ENGINE)
---------6|-------|5
---------4|-------|3
---------2|-------|1
(front of engine)
hope this helps the cap is labeled with the # 1 but the rest go counter clockwise in order and yes the autolite plugs are the best in my opinion that's what i use and they make a big difference

Message: I know that you can put them on the motor wrong and cross all types of cylinders but can you put the #6 wire on the #4 spark plug and cap or does it matter.

Message: ok sorry i wasn't sure what you were asking but i don't think you can just switch the #4 nd #6 at all that would cause them to fire all wrong i read in an earlier post that you can change all of them and get it to work but not just 2 wires because it would put the fire to the wrong plug at the wrong time you might want to go thru all the post and see for sure though

Message: Get the correct firing order (it is stamped on the intake manifold of the V8s). Then check to see if the wires are plugged into the distributor cap in the same order. The distributor cap has a "1" (for cylinder 1) to get you started.
Plug in the wire from cylinder 1 into the port in the distributor cap marked with the "1". Then follow up with the rest of the wires in the proper firing sequence.
Sometimes wires can be out of order and the engine will still run "almost" normal.

Message: icemanKY that is the best way I have ever seen anybody describe how to plug-wire a V-6. kryp. what the he double toothpicks do you mean by detonate a piston by having the plugs fire in the wrong order ???? I never heard of it and I been street racing since '68.

Message: Magnecor makes the best plugs on the market. They can be found in commuting cars, as well as top fuel dragsters.
This is all using the same kv-85 type wire.
I cant say the same for autocrap.
msd makes crap like "spiral core" claim 50 ohms of resistance, but that is when 1 volt is passed through the wires
when you push 40-60K volts through your wires (I push 58K in my 3.0 spirit) your plug wires that are 50 ohms are now going to be something like a couple thousand because their inner core is poorly made and only handles a little power, the rest is forced into a conductive coating that surrounds the core. The conductive coating is not meant to carry spark......
this means that when spark is going to your plugs, a large amount of that spark is going to disapate in your wires, before it makes it to the plug. I Like my wires that have a huge 2.5 mm core, and a core which is wrapped many more times than msd or competitors "comp" wires. They carry all the spark your coil provides. The only contents of these wires, are a 2.5 mm core and the pure silicone (1 really thick layer) that makes the wires 8.5 mm. Silicone does NOT conduct electricity.
if you look into most wires, you will see all kinds of crap under their think silicone covers. THis material is cheap, and is used to absorb the spark that their poor quality cores are overwhelmed by.
Most comp wires are just a con, just like most comp plugs.
You do not get more spark from a plug like a bosch 4+ plantinum, and you dont get more from a splitfire.
splitfire was successfully sued recently for lieing about their products usefulness.
their plugs do not give hp at all, but if you find a car that has damaged plugs, and replace them with splitfires (or any plug) it will feel like you gained hp.
In reality you just got back the hp your old plugs were taking. My money goes for ngk plugs that cost less than just about any plug out there, even econo plugs. ngk's are flat out a great deal, and are very high quality, plus they last a long time.
so back to wires. those autolights are just like any other competition wire out there.
poor emi (car comp) suppression, no rfi (radio) suppression (or vice versa sometimes, or even lies like......our emi suppression will cut out radio static that most comp wires give).....since emi has nothing to do with your radio, I wouldnt suggest buying wires from someone who wants to flat out make claims like that.
and why dont you guys just take like a sharpie and write what cyl goes to what part of the dist?
my car luckily has everything already stamped.

Message: actually it doesn't matter the ohms or resistance after soo much on the wires because the plugs have to be accounted for to and their resistance counts the most in the end because electric travels to the lowest resistance.... talking to a computer and electrical major here.. :)

| Blue Smoke With New Spark Plugs IP: Logged
Message: I just did a little tune up with my van. I had checked the oil and noticed that it was almost 3 quarts low! So I decided to change the oil. Then I remembered that the spark plugs had not been changed for a while so I changed those. . Now when I rev the engine , I get blue smoke out of the tail pipe(especially when the engine is cold). It seems to go away when I drive it when the engine is warm. It seems to run fine. But I notice that if the gas pedal is held in one place the engine seems to change RPM's. Any clue as to why this would happen?

Message: Considering the daks hold about 4 quarts of oil...some 4 1/2...it wouldn't surprise me if running your engine on that little amount of oil didn't screw something up quite badly. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that something is.
