Subject: Which TB for a 3.9 V6 IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering which TB I could use to change out for my stock one. I have read here that you can change it out for a V8 one, but am unclear of what is all involved. Is it just a straight swap, minor modifications?? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.. I am getting the mod bug and would like to start with some things that will get things flowing better..

Message: The new style dakotas, swap the TB and the throttle cable, direct bolt up. I have heard the swap take 15 min. Myself It took most the night (3 hours) but I did alot of cleaning of parts, and a few other things. Older style dakotas, their is a few years you have to do minor gringing or something. Trust me, worth the $$ and time.

Message: but which TB is the one that I would be after.. I have read some people say to get one from a V8.. But I am running a V6. I am admittedly not very knowledgeable about vehicles, but am wanting to learn more and just get a little more performance from my truck..

Message: Your stock TB is 42-44mm. The TB Dale is pointing out is a stock V8 TB which is 48mm. Stay close to your year Dak for a replacement. Check out www.speedtweats.net for some helpful hints and guides. Bernd is a great source of info. On the TB swap, you need swap all 4 sensors (unless the V8 comes with them) and gasket. I had the service for guidance and F&B install instructions. Good luck.

Message: 4 sensors?? Mine only has 3? But anyway, Yes the v6 will take a v8 TB. Its bigger bore, allows more air in. An engine is a huge air pump so... more air in, more air out=more power. The ECM systems designed on todays cars can take up to 25% adjustment (so I was told) so if your going from 44mm to a 48mm that is like 15% difference. So its withing the limits. ;)

Message: Well, because this was brought up I thought I'd ask... Can you use an aftermarket (larger bore) tb designed for the 5.9 v8 on the 3.9? A friend of mine is giving me what I presume is a tb he bought to upgrade his big v8, but never got around to it. What I'm wondering is if it will still fit the smaller engined dakota, and will it actually be TOO big for the lower intake demands of a stock v6? If anyone has tried this I'd like to know!

Message: JT, if is an aftermarket TB for a V8 it will be too big for your V6. For a stock to even fairly modified V6 all you need is a 48mm.
