Subject: 3.9 V6 Problem... IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
Here's my problem. I've got a 1992 Dakota LE it has 84500 miles. I recently noticed that that oil was blowing into the air cleaner. Which led me to believe I was having a compression problem. Well, the place I took it to said my rings were bad. They suggested that I should just look into getting a new motor, so, I'd like to know if anyone has any good sites to find another 3.9 or if they have any suggestions to help keep my current motor running.
Thanks!
Chris

Message: to your problem with your 6, first try changing your p.c.v., it sounds like its sticking open. second, take the plugs out and inspect them, if they are full of oil, you might have worn rings. but what I am trying to comprehend is that your rings would were at only 86K. I had a 93 v-6 dak that had 145K on it, that I used for daily trans, and did not have one prolem with the engine..

Message: Ive got a 99 Dakota with the 3.9 in it and it seemed to be loosing a lot of power. I recently did a compression test on it and the highest compression # was only 126psi, and the lowest was 87psi. One other cilender was good(124psi) and one other was below 100 and the rest in between. Not good at all for an engine with only 47,500 miles on it. I followed up with a leakdown test and with the cilinter full of air i pulled off the breather hose and there was a horrifieing amount of air comeing out. all but 2 cylenders had a leakdown of about 65-85% leakage. Again not good. Im not sure what to do next. Definetly a rebuilt. I doubt i will get any type of warrenty. I allways keep up on maintence and oil changes too. Anyone else have these kinds of problems? Any suggestions as to what i should do now? New engine or rebuild? V8 swap??

Message: Why in the hell were you @ 5500 RPM? What makes you think the head gasket is blown? If it is smoking white with a sweet smell to the exhaust, then yes it is your head gasket.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: 1995 dakota, will not start-so far have changed the crankshaft position sensor, auto shutdown relay, coil, distributor pickup, and the computer. I have traced the wiring and where the one wire splices into three is good. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Message: Does it turn over? If it does, are you getting fuel to the injectors?(check fuel pressure) There is only so many things that can happen if it doesn't start. Fuel or Spark. If you are getting spark, look at fuel pump/relay, fuel filter, etc.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Have you checked all of the fuses? There is a fuse in the cab of the truck that feeds these sytems...I can't remember off hand which one it is, but I use to pull it when I would leave my truck sitting in the parking lot for more than a week(antitheft reasons)
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Push the accelarator to the floor & turn it over. I'm not sure how it works but I've been told that doing so will reset the ralays{?} for the fuel pump. My Dakota was showing the same symptoms u have after the battery went dead. I did the above & it started right up. Worth a shot.

Message: I have a 1996 Dakota with 150,000 miles give or take a hundred or so,A/T,EFI,4x4. Most of the time it will not start without having to keep my foot on the pedal for about 5 minutes or until it warms up it seems. Also when I go up steep hills it will lose power until it stalls and it will not start up again until a few hours later at which time I can start it up and can drive it, as long as I don't go up any hills.
Anybody else have this problem?
What to do?
