Subject: Fuel Gauge IP: Logged
Message: I am having a problem with my '98 Dak with the fuel gauge "sticking" between 1/8 and 1/4 tank. I've run out of gas twice now because of this problem. Has anybody else experienced this problem? I've heard that it could be the fuel sending unit. Does this make sense?
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Message: I've been getting my gas from a BP or Marathon. Is Marathon owned by Shell? Did you notice your gas gauge working correctly if getting gas from a BP or anybody but Shell?

Message: Yes I did. It ended up being the fuel sending unit in the tank itself. I got the part from my local dealer for around $45. Had to drop the tank and pull the fuel pump. The sending unit is atached to the pump. Haven't had a problem since.

Message: There is a fuel sending unit attached to the fuel pump. It's just a small chip with a lever attached to it. Pretty easy to change.

Message: What year is your truck? I have a electronic fuel gauge, which is the fuel sending unit. If your's has the electronic fuel gauge, then it is probably the sending unit that is bad.

Message: You may want to call up your local dodge service center and tell them the problem. Also ask them if the sending unit is fixable or if you have to change out the entire fuel pump. I'm not sure if the sending unit on the '96 can be fixed without replacing the entire fuel pump.
