Message:
okay, it just started today when i was at a red light. I was siting there and noticed that my oil pressure was runing at like 15/20.. it normally always runs at 40+. But as soon as i give it gas, in gear or out, the pressure goes back up to normal.. what gives!!! Does anyone have any ideas? like the oil pump, or is it as simple as the belt getting worn. Please help, i run long miles everyday and hate to keep runing my baby is shes sick :)

yep my truck use to do that.....now the oil is so thick it never runs below 40 ushally around 50-55......i had my oil changed last time(only 10.99) and they must have used a thicker oil b/c it takes forever to thin out and is thicker when warmed up. but i think its normal. my truck has ran like that since i've had it which is 50k miles and is still running good

i put this post on recalls but ill put it here to. using haynes manual at idle 3.9 and 5.2 liter engines at idle should not go below 6 psi and at 3000 rpm oil pressure can range from 30 to 80 psi. this manual covers 1987 to 1996 models so i dont know if there is a difference on newer models but i doubt it. hope this helps and i have a 94 dakII v6 and run 10-30 oil and am in the stated perimeters stated in manual.

same here. it just really started doing it after my last oil change(about 1000 mi ago) when i took the old filter off it was heavy as hell and the oil was low before i drained it and i didnt think anything of it (i went a little 3000 mi). i was asking as friend of mine about it and he said it might be because of the oil filter(fram). he said he has heard of fram filters clogging up causing erratic pressure and or worse. i'm changing mine out tomorrow i'll let you know if it helps

Rooknute....you don't state the last time you had an oil change?? Or the fact that you checked your dipstick to make sure your had enough oil?? I would try an oil change before you start replacing stuff. Most of the time you will find that there is a problem with the oil filter, either clogged or just plain bad. Just because you spent 12 bucks on a GOOD oil filter, sometimes you will get one that is just bad.

After you have changed your oil, if your pressure still shows a low reading, I would have someone with an oil pressure gauge check the system for you. You could have an bad oil sending unit, or one that leaks. Generally, if you maintain your truck your oil pump seldom goes bad, but it has been known to happen.

The fact that the pressure goes up when you start to drive sounds to me like it is something minor...

98FlameRdDak, i'm not a total ideot ;) I checked the level of the oil and i'm going to change the oil and filter this weekend. I really hope its something stupid with the filter or maybe i just wore out the oil faster. I cant see that thou cause i do use royal purpal, and it says to run the oil twice as long as you normally would. Its only been abour 4000 or so since i last changed it.

How much will a shop charge to check the pressure? I dont think we have one at the shop, maybe someone ealse does. I'll have to get back to you guys and see what the problem was, or is!

It's really not anything to worry about. I noticed my 98 3.9 doing it somewhere aroung 30,000 miles. I am a gauge freak, so I'm surprised I hadn't noticed it before. From everyone I've talked to, it is TOTALLY normal. I don't know all the mechanics of it (what causes the pressure to increase) but I've talked to lots of people and everyone says it's normal.

Although I check my gauges a lot, I have convinced myself that it has ALWAYS done this. I usually check my gauges while at idle or while cruising. Rarely if ever, during acceleration. Thus, I wouldn't see the needle moving.

Anyway, I have been watching it for the last 53,000 miles and it has consistently acted the same way ever since (idles lower and increase on acceleration, then settles at a higher level at cruise speed).

Just my two cents

Was there any more input of the fram filter?? I want to know before i buy one..thanks guys

It's simple really, and yes, it's always done that. :0)

Your oil pump is driven off the crank (or cam, I'm not sure which on the Dakotas. My old chevy ran off the cam by means of the distributor shaft). When the engine is at idle, the internals and the pump turn slower, reducing the pressure. When you are giving it gas, the engine speeds up, as does the pump, and the pressure goes up. At cruising speed the engine RPM is about steady, as is the oil pumps pressure.

Hope that made sense?

well i changed my oil and used a stp filter and the gauge went up and stayed up. none of this dropping down to the last low mark,(couple of times it went a little lower) when i come to a stop. i checked the oil before i changed it and it was pretty low and when i took the old filter off i was even heavier than the last time. i dont burn oil really (not bad for having about 198,000) and not leaking any. so my only other guess would be that fram just dosent agree w/ my truck and it the oil is clogging up in there.

Rooknute, first off, I wasn't calling you an IDIOT. Its just that sometimes people don't think about simple things like checking oil level, etc.

Secondly, you have 198,000 miles? That is what you stated in a previous post. If you have that many miles and you stated your oil filter felt heavier than normal, I would guess that you might have some sludge built up in your oil pan. Even with the best oil you will get some build up. Quaker State is really good for this some Quaker State oil contains some paraffin wax.

As for Fram Oil filters, I have never had one ever go bad. I have used Fram filters since I started driving cars and started to maintain my own vehicles. When I don't have time to change my own oil, I buy what I want and take it to one of those oil change places and give them my own oil and filter.

I know that other people have stated that FRAMS are junk....until one fails me, I will continue to use them.

Mark

nope oil pan is clean. i had it off not that long ago and my valve covers were pretty clean too. i took them off because i posted earlier about my pressure going sky high. by the way, i have oil fills on both of my valve covers, nobody else that has a dak (or any other vehicle for that matter) has heard of that. im guessing who ever had it before had to have done some work on it what do you all think?

i dont use quaker state never have never will. not a fan of it and i dont know of anyone that does really. and i have always used fram too. never had any problems either until recently and that guy i was talking too said he never heard anything bad until recently either. im not saying dont use them its just that some people have better luck with them than others. its like that with everything its just a personal preference really

Well, some good news! I changed my oil this weekend with Royal Purple and the pressure went back up and stayed up. I think that maybe i was eather using too thin of a oil for the warm weather we've been having or the filter was bad. I put a Fram back on it because thats what i have always used. So well see how that works.

98FlameRdDak, i think you have me and someone ealse mixed up, i only have 100,7** on the truck. I think Zerv stated about the high milage and heavy filter. No worries thou, it was a help talking it threw with people. Thanks to all!!!

I doubt it. It probably has something to do with the wieght of the oil vs the temp. You said it never happened before but have you always used the same wieght? Have you always used synthetic? Also a word to the wise I don't care how slippery the oil you use is by the time you hit 3000 miles its dirty and needs to be changed.

Rooknute,

have you used the Royal Purple before?? It has VERY high detergent like properties in it, and will "knock" allot of junk loose if a conventional oil was used before. As a result RP will tend to clog filters fairly quickly. I have 240,000 km on my 89 (never opened up!), and run the 15w40 RP for 8000 between oil changes, but change the filter every 2000.

Incidentally, oil doesn't get "dirty" or "wear out", it's the additives that breakdown, and that's why you change oil. Reccyled oil is almost as good as regular brands. Theoretically, you should be able to use a synthetic forever, as long as the filters are changed often enough to keep the oil clean.

As for fitlers, Fram used to be an excellent brand, until the name was bought by allied signal. Now the filters are exactly the same as all the low end filter brands floating around (allied signal manufactures and brand labels for just about everybody.) RP is one of the best oils out there, but it is expensive. We have changed to RP on a couple of our problematic high HP recip compressors (away from our own brand, try to explain that to management!) and have drop our MTBF on the bearings of these machines by 20-30%.

Just my two bits....

Pririe dak, thanks for the information on RP. I have always used it since i bought the dakota. Thats all i have ever used. But i usually dont change the filter untill like 4000 miles, maybe if i start cutting that in half i'll get better results with the RP stuff. Does RP make a filter for their oil? And what about the K&N oil filters i always see? If fram is just like the others now, what should i put in the truck, the cheapest one? I dont mean to ask a ill. questions but i just dont want to hurt the motor anymore than possible. I do that enuff with the way i drive :) Thanks again for the info.

Ohh i was also wondering if you live in a warm area, i thought the 15w40 would be think during the winter months?

Rooknute,

As for filters, here is an oil filter study I found while researching the buildup of my now infamous '85 Omni GLHs Turbo (The absolute FASTEST street car I have ever owned!! used to break the front tires loose on Deerfoot (local freway), at 90 km/hr in third when the boost came on (limited to 22 PSI)).
Richard is a dodge 2.2L guru and did this study to check on the quality of different oil filter manufacturer's. I don't know if his website is still around, but the oil filter study has been re published at

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

As for the 15W40 up here in Calgary, I have never had a problem until it gets down to about -25C, at which point I plug the truck in. (We in Canada do not have electric cars, those plugs hanging out of the front are for block heaters!!)

Good luck!!
