Message: This is not about my dakota, sorry. I just had the head gasket replaced at a reputable repair shop 1.8 toyota engine in a 1988 chevy nova 1 owner car I have driven it 4 hours and have put $1000 in it . Any way one week (167 miles)later the timing belt broke . Did they have to take the timing belt off to replace head gasket ? This car sat for about 2-3 yrs before I found it 90K on it and looks brand new.

Message: Yes they would have to remove the timing belt when removing the head. And at the very least, if the belt was that bad, they should have recommended changing it at the time the head was off.

Message: Hate to give you some bad news but, When that belt
snapped it most likely bent valves.

Message: The belt had been changed less than 1000 miles earlier still had sticker saying this belt was installed by certified napa something or other . The motor is non intrusive so the valves should be ok was not driving when broke just turned key . Ran fine the night before parked it and went to move it to wash my Dakota.
