Subject: 88 stall issue IP: Logged
Message: Hello, recently I purchased a 1988 Dakota with V6,
auto 4x4. When I got it it would die off like it
had a vac problem. I went over the vac system and
replace needed hoses and connections. Did not fix
issue. Proceeded to do tune up with new plugs,
wires, coil, cap, rotor, and Hall effect. Ran
better but still died at lights or when I put into
gear (without 2footing it). Noticed at idle fuel
pressure was off. Changed fuel pump, strainer, and
filter. Now idles great. Still every time I put
into drive it stalls the engine. I even replaced
the Idle control valve. I am at a complete loss.
Local shops keep telling me what I have already
done. Any ideas? Thanks.

Message: hey i can relate, same problem with my though i was next to change idle speed control but will hold on that since you still struggle after your repair. my truck is 88 2wd auto v6, have done tune up and fuel pump and strainer with filter, and still stalls at red lights or at a stop sign 45% of the time. was hoping for advice also for next step, and no check engine light on either?

Message: Managed to get it to another shop. He had
transmission guy look at it. He claims my torque
convertor is in lock up. Will have to be replaced.
He explained it as a manual tranny trying to go in
gear without clutching it. Any thoughts?

Message: As Bob posted check for codes. A sensor could be telling the converter to lock up when it's not supposed to. Not necessarilly the converter itself.

Message: Not picking up any codes. Had to drive it this
morning and it wasn't doing it all the time. It was
like as it was losing rpms coming to a stop and the
idle control valve would barely catch it.

Message: Now this is strange... I was informed to disconnect
the top vac hose to the metal cap EGR valve while
the engine was running to see if the sound of the
engine changed. Not only no change but no feeling of
any vac on either side of connection.... I was told
if everything on the vac was correct it would change
the sound of engine when I disconnected.??

Message: HI:
I would love some input. My son's 1988 just started this morning to stall at stop signs. I am reading a few different possibilities here. What is the MOST likely cause. We have the repair manual and checked to see that the sound was coming from the fuel pump when the key is turned to the start position. That is as far as we got. We only paid $500 for the truck..what are we looking at pricec wise?

Message: Patience is the best. The truck is 22 yrs old. If
it is like mine neglected. I would recommend the
easy stuff first. Go over the vacuum system to
check for leaks. His doesn't sound too bad if it
just started.
Look for factory parts that have worn out, EGR
valve, Throttle position sensor, Idle control
switch, tune up stuff like that. Mine was pretty
bad. The EGR was factory as well as throttle
position sensor. They are great trucks and last
forever if taken care of. So far I'm about $300 in
parts.

Message: Was searching for anything in the way of vac leaks
and while spraying TB fluid around I found an idle
shift at the rear of Throttlebody. Decided to get a
TB rebuild kit. Wasn't expensive. While rebuilding
TB I found two of the rear vac chambers completely
full of carbon. After cleaning and doing the rebuild
I installed TB in truck. It wasn't perfect but not
it only stalls every now and then and cranks right
back up. I can put into gear without it stalling.
