Message: Last year I picked up a 89 Dakota convertible with nearly 250,000 on it. The kid I bought it from said that AAmco had rebuilt the tranny around 40,000 miles earlier and had a receipt showing a fluid change the day before I bought the truck. The truck shifted very good with no signs of slippage. The tranny was growling lightly under forty MPH unless the OD was turned off. Turn off the OD and the growling went away. I only used the OD when over 50 MPH. Everyhing seemed fine for the last year as long as I used the OD as described. In the last week I noticed that the growling / grinding begins while in 1st gear and disappears when in 3rd gear. I checked the fluid and topped off with Coastal ATF+4. I plan on replacing the filter and fuild ASAP but was hoping for a diagnosis before I drop the pan. Also, the converter lock up doesn't seem to work, so I plan on checking the connectors and solenoid. Does anyone have any idea what the growling noice is?
