Subject: MSD Blaster ignition on 87 V6 IP: Logged
Message: I installed an MSD 5900 Blaster ignition on my 87 Dak cuz I had to swap out the original carb for the non-feedback variety becuz the mixture control solenoid went south and you can't buy a new replacement and I still have to pass smog and I thought an upgraded ignition might help do that.
So then the stock coil starts getting super hot so i sprung for a Blaster 2 coil and now the damn thing (the MSD combo... I LUV my Dak) stumbles on accelerating from a dead stop.
I can use the MSD 5900 Blaster ignition with the stock coil or the MSD Blaster coil with the stock ignition and the truck runs like a dream, but not both together or I get a hair pulling, cat stomping, dog kicking stumble on acceleration from a dead stop.
My plug wires are about 3000 ohms per foot. I'm thinking maybe a lower resistance wire set, but then I realize that the plug gap has almost infinite resistance. Then I thought maybe I should wait til dark, fire it up and raise the hood to see if I can see where the electricity is going. Maybe I just need better insulated plug wires.
Thoughts?

Message: I ended up putting in a 1 ohm ballast resistor because I had one laying around and the stumble from a dead stop was GONE!
Also the idle smoothed out to the best I have ever seen it. I tried it becuz the symptoms describe in the first post made me think there was TOO MUCH juice with both the MSD ignition and the MSD coil, so before I sprung 50-60 bucks for low resistance wires to try to deal with it I thought I would choke down on the voltage to the coil primary with the ballast resistor and that apparently was the problem... too much juice at the coil tower. Now I need to find out if low resistance wires would solve the problem. I'm in no hurry and the meantime the ballast resistor is allowing the MSD stuff to shove maximum power to the plugs that the cap, rotor and wires will allow and after all I been through with this up til now I will take it.
