I have a 94 dakota w/ a 3.9 liter/v6 and for about the past 4 months i have noticed a chirping sound and the it has turned out to be a squealling sound. i have replaced 2 serpintine belts, the tentionor, the single pully, and still have the problem, i recently took the power steering pump off and had it checked but there has no problem with that. this morning i took the belt off and ran the engine and the sound was gone, then reinstalled the belt and the sound came back and was even worse than when i took it off. i was told that the sound was coming from the water pump and was told it sounded like the bearing in the pump was going out, but the truck doesnt get hot and maintains a normal operating temp. i spun the pully on the altanator and it seemed a little stiff, but poeple are always acting like i have my brights on at night and i have never had any electrical problems. i spun the fan with the belt on and it moved without much resistance but would not spin freely by itself. I am really puzzled, but am leaning toward the water pump. it looks like it had been replaced before i bought the truck. does this sound right? and does dodges have problems with the bearings inside the water pumps much. please help. i need some advice

Having the same problem with my 99 Dakota. From the Cab the noise seems to be coming from under the hood (belt/pully noise)but I had by Bro drive along side and found the noise coming from under the cab and associated with the Drive line. Pretty sure it is U-joints. I would discribe my noise as a Chirping/squealing just as you discribed. I sprayed the two u-joints (rear driveshift) with WD-40 and the noise has virtually stopped. This more or less confirms it is the U-joints. I have not changed them yet but plan on doing so in a few weeks. Anyway, I hope this helps you figure out your problem.

When I got home I pulled off the sepentine belt and wiglled the engine fan and discovered it was very loose which told me it was the water pump bearing. I replaced the water pump and the noise completely stopped. What I did figure out is that the seal on the water pump does not need to leak nor does the seep hole need to bust before the bearings show that they are going out. Appx how many miles do you have on your 99 model? One thing I am wondering about is the transmission. I have appx 114500 miles on my 94 with a 4 speed w/ overdrive automatic and was wondering how long will they go without any problems if moderatly taken care of?
