hey my boyfriend has a 88 dodge dakota and it runs for less then 5 minutes then dies. A lot of people had suggests changing things such as spark plugs, fuel injector, the wiring, pick up coil the computer, distributor cap all these were changes but the problem is still there, does anyone know what this could be? what could be causing this to happen>

he then code the error code for the pickup coil and replaced that but still didnt fix the problem. Its 5 cylinder and the first cylinder isnt sparking....

i was reading through some other posts and read about the Hall-effect sensor? that if it mal-functions it will not tell the computer to allow power to the coil to produce a spark. (when checking the codes it said that something was wrong with the pick up coil so that was replaced but it still didnt fix the problem) anyway in the post it then said the distributor sends the spark but the computer sets the timing. it does this by controlling the voltage it send to the coil. when the PCM goes bad (n which you will get no code telling u) it overloads the coil and for some reason only some cylinders spark? Could this be the problem? is the hall effect sensor and pcm located in the distibutor? if so could the problem be fixed by just replacing the entire distributor?? thanks to all who have given suggestions!

next time it dies

pull a spark plug and see

wet - losing spark

dry - losing fuel

pinpoint the problem than you can fix it
