Subject: shudders, stalls, why? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 96 dakota, v6. I've recently replaced:
PCM (twice!)
Crank Sensor
O2 Sensors (NGK's)
Ignition Coil (Echlein not Duralast-bad when new)
Plugs and Wires
Distributor Cap and Wire
Pick-Up Coil (Hall-Effect Sensor)
Battery
Fuel Pump
PCM and Crank Sensor went bad so I decided to do tune-up anyway. Two days later the fuel pump quit. I can't complain to much. I've had the truck for 10 yrs without any issues so dropping several hundred in less than a month really isn't too depressing when you average the cost over that long.
If only that was the end though. Yesterday I'm sitting at a traffic light idling along at 650 700 RPM and it dies. It cranked back up no problem. A couple minutes later while cruising around 40 mph in 4th gear, it bucked and shuddered 3-4 times before settling out. It seems like it's running a little weak as well. I added a can of fuel treatment maybe thinking that some water got in the lines during my fuel pump change but that's really a shot in the dark. Was wondering what you all think?

Message: Closely check all of your vacuum lines, sounds like maybe you accidentally knocked one loose. That sounds like a good place to start.

Message: how about the pickup in the dist
this tels the injectors when to fire
And vary rarly will trip a code heres how I check
them
digital volt meter now ground the black lead
go to radio shack and get some jumper wires with
the aligator clips
now get a stick pin if you don't have a wire
diagram you will need to find the signal wire
stick the pin in the signal wire clip the jumper
to it and run a wire from that out the hood into
the cab and conect to the digital meter other
end with jumper wire to ground
set the meter where you can easily see it and
drive the truck and watch the signal from the
dist pickup, than do the same with the crank
signal and the o2 signal
This is the only way I have found to find some of
these problems because checking while standing
still you find nothing wrong but the customer
goes and it acts up
There are so many splices in the harnas its hard
to beleave the last one like that ended up
being a splice between the o2 crank to the comp
and had to undo the harnas from the o2 all the way
up to the back of the motor before I found
the splice which caused intermitant staling
while driving it was a power lead for both o2 and
crank sensor
I know its a real pain in the A$$ but is the only
way to track these ba$tard bad splices down and
it takes a lot of testing to even find where the
problem is occuring
when done probing the wires like that just rub
a little silicon over where you stuck the pin
to seal the wire back up
The last one I mentioned took 3 full days to
track down but I could not charge the customer
for 24 hours labor I charged him only to undo
the harnas and find the bad splice and repair
4 hours once i located aprox where it was and
undid the harnas to fix
Oh Man That Was A Head Ace And A Half
Good luck but its the only way I know

Message: Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the long delay but just got back from a needed vacation. I've driven the truck about 50 miles since getting back. It's still running rough but there's no more bucking like it did a couple weeks ago. The CEL is currently not illuminated but I thought I would check for codes anyway. I got an 11 which is NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM. This is baffling as I've had the crank sensor replaced already. Is there something else that could be causing this rough running/missing that is making it seem like there's less power than there should be? I wonder if the new computer I got is not reading the pulse from the crank sensor? I just want my old dependable always running right truck of 10 years back. I've spent right at 1250 now trying to do just that. I know you mentioned the Pick-Up coil larry but that is new also. I read your procedure for tracking these things down. It's disgusting to think that just replacing parts isn't enough. Now I have to be a Wire Splice CSI just to be able to fix something?
