I just wanted to give an update in regards to increasing my mpg's. Before making any mods to my 94 Dak, I was getting 14 mpg city and 17 highway. I have since, had my exhaust system converted over to a true dual exhaust, switched to a V8 TB, installed headers, installed Taylor 8.2 wires, E3 plugs, K&N Air filter, switched to 0W-30 Amsoil, flushed my transmission and adjusted my kickdown and reverse bands, and I keep my rpms at 2000 or less. My results, 17 city and 24 highway. The info on this site gave me some awesome tips.

there are quite a few here that have tried the MSD system and love it. i haven't personally used one but from what iv'e read it can be beneficial but, will wear ignition components( cap, rotor) faster than the stock ignition does. maybe one of them will post up or just start another thread asking about it.

Thanks. I used a Mallory HyFire 4 system about 15 years ago on a carbureted Chevy and it worked well, just didn't know if it would work as well on a late model fuel injected.

and long inter state trips i'm getting 30!
truck rides just fine
dont want to believe it then dont I really dont care either way

Larry of J&J auto has worked on many of these trucks
and I'm sure he can confirm the MPGs I am getting are very obtainable

BTW weight gentlemen!
my truck with my carcass in it
full size spare and just about half a tank
weighs in it 3180

my best MPGs to date are long interstate trips I take once or twice a year
with a best of 31.4

anything else you want to know?

heres one of your problems right here
"-180 t stat "

been talked many a times on here
9 out of 10 times it does nothing but make the truck burn up more gas & little for power

tried one in my truck my MPGs dropped
to a pathetic 20 and seen NO power increase at all

some of you guys make me laugh
your looking to add another 50 horsepower or something to your truck and also expect to get 25 MPGs or better

its power or economy guys
take your pick
you can improve one but rarely both

how much worse mpg does the 180tstat get? i put one in since my stock tstat was messed up not thinking it would give me worse mpg. i didnt notice what the mpg was before. i would buy a 195 if i got noticably better mpg... what kind of gain would i get from one?

i'd have to say at least 3-5mpg. i ditched the 180 thermo and back to 195 factory. the 180 did seem to help with power but not mpg. i noticed the very slight loss of power when putting the 195 back in. also, ditch the cold air intake if you've got one and put the factory airbox back on and leave the elbow off. i checked numbers with elbow on and off from full tanks and consistently get at least 2 mpg more with the elbow off probly due to getting more warm air off the engine. My only mods are K&N drop in and flowmaster 50 series. I use the champ plugs at oem gap and regular cap and wires and reg gas and get 20-21 highway at 65mph. i have 2002 3.9 5spd 2wd reg cab sport package with 88,000 miles on it. I have 255/65r16's and can't help but wonder if the smaller tires "geez" is running would contribute to his better mpg though i would think smaller would be more revolutions meaning higher rpm's and worse mpg, been awhile since my last physics class!!! well "geez", if it's true and no one's saying it aint, just questioning it, than i envy the hell out of you and say to you way to go!!

Another thing to consider about tire size and mileage is that they affect your speedometer and odometer. I have 235's on mine and it calls for 215's. When I pass those speed sensors in the town it flashes 32 and I'm at 30. So, smaller tires will porbably look like better mpgs, but you are most likely traveling the same distance.

I've been trying various things - K&N air filter+new O2 sensor (mpg up +1), Halo plugs (mpg same - waste of $ - I'm returning them), New distributor cap/rotor + Taylor 8.2mm SpiroPro wires (mpg down -1).

Runs better now, but you should have seen the thick corrosion on the center pin of my old distributor cap. I'm surprised the dang thing even ran. Yet I was getting better mileage with it.

I've been reading up on this stuff. Seems like no matter what you do to improve your burn, your PCM computer is going to screw you - its a closed loop system. You improve the burn, you get more O2 in your exhaust, the PCM detects that and richens your mixture to get the O2 down. Richer mixture = less mpg. Poor ignition = less O2 = leaner mixture = better mpg.

Seems back-asswards to me, but that seems to be how it works...

Any thoughts?

Still not sure what truck you have (4 cyl. Reg
cab?). I think we're all just curious and I'm a little envious!

I was at the metal recycler last weekend and my
truck weighed 3995 lbs with 1/2 a tank of gas and no load.

I see alot here there lack of maintenance will get you know where in mileage,if you bought truck used that would be first thing to do start going through all that you can work on obvious if you bought new or used you will have to money to drive these trucks and no mod will give any major increase in mileage and remember these trucks are rated 15 city 20 highway give or take if you wanted better mileage you should of stayed away from buying a dakota because they are not gas mileage savers and should of considered a car at $4.00 + a gallon all sudden everyone wants better mileage in these trucks come on you all know better I can remember gas in my early days under $1.00 and still had lead in the gas days long gone....

gas wasn't $4 a gallon in 2002 when i bought my dakota. if i had to buy a new vehicle now no way would i look at any trucks. gas was .89 cents a gallon when i started driving 18 years ago. and we complained when it hit $2 a gallon, to have those days back would be a blessing! i had all the mods and didn't do too bad on mpg but all back to factory aside from the air filter and much better mpg!
