Subject: TV Cable Adjustments
IP: Logged

Message:
I hear you can change the RPM at which my automatic transmission would shift gears. If this is true, and all I need to do is adjust the TV Cable. Aside from hurting my gas milage, are there any other dangers or things in which i should worry about or look for? Anything that could break or wear out?

Thanks for all the help

I don't have cable, I have satellite....

With the TV cable maladjusted you can cause erratic operation, and maybe even damage.
If you do a search of the forum you will find a few folks who thought their tranny was shot but a TV adjustment fixed it.

My transmission isn't broken, I just wish to shift at a higher point. If I had a manual transmission this would not be a problem, however i do not. There is no other way to change the RPM at which I shift at safely? I have a v6, so its not controlled by the computer.

Im gonna assume your truck is an 01. If so, then it's controlled by the computer weather its a v6 or not.

You can indeed adjust the shift points during "normal driving" by adjusting the TV cable, to some extent. It is the cable that attaches to the bracket at the rear of the throttle body. Pull out the white clip, then the cable shielding is free to slide back and forth.

You have to be careful, its very sensitive and you can supposedly harm your transmission if you move it too far out of spec. It should be adjusted so that the transmission throttle lever and the throttle body plates move in unison (within 1mm.) There are posts on this site that discuss this procedure in more detail.

Supposedly the shift points at WOT are computer controlled, so this won't affect those. If it's shifting too early at WOT, maybe the TPS sensor isn't properly reporting WOT to the computer. Also, the 3-4 shift is electronically actuated, so this adjustment won't affect it either.

What your saying suggests its hydraulically controlled and electronically controlled. Its either one or the other not both.

i figured it was one or the other, but oh well

any1 know of a write up? everything i search has a link to how to do it, but literally none of the links people provide are valid for me, for whatever reason, i copy them in2 my url and they all say page not found or error 404, so perhaps the pages have expired, but that leaves me out of luck until some1 can send me a new link hopefully

and as a side note, i do know how to do it since i read the manual, but since this is a modification, not a common tune up, they wont tell me how much to adjust it, and as mike98 said"t should be adjusted so that the transmission throttle lever and the throttle body plates move in unison (within 1mm.)" and i want to do just as he said so i dont screw anything up

Yeah I might have been FOS on the "electronic" shifting at WOT vs. TV-cable based shift at partial throttle. I thought I remembered reading that somewhere, sorry. The 3-4 shift is definitely electronic though.

And as far as how to adjust the cable, I couldn't find the link I was thinking of either.

But you can figure it out intuitively, just remember that you want the transmission to "think" that the gas pedal is pushed harder than it really is, so it will shift at higher RPMS. So pull the throttle cable a little bit, and note how far the TV cable is pulled forward. Then, adjust the TV cable shielding so that the TV cable is pulled that far forward at idle. Be careful, it's sensitive, and if you go to far it'll hit the rev limiter before it shifts. Good luck.
