Subject: V6+big tires IP: Logged
Message: I bought a '99 dakota sport 4x4 V6 this summer with 31" tires, and it's a bit sluggish accelerating-would a smaller set of tires give me better acceleration, or is the truck just too big for the 31s?

Message: Well the 3.9 is no powerhouse to begin with but its solid. I have a 1997 3.9v6 4x4 RC 5speed and since putting 31 BFG AT KOs on it ive noticed no real difference in acceleration but it has dropped a few MPG but chances are your running an auto with a extra cab so yours would be even worse then mine.

Message: It is an extended cab, but it is also 5-speed. I've been getting about 15.75mpg average (mostly highway)-how good of mileage have other ppl gotten with 5-speed V6 with smaller tires?

Message: Sounds like bout average mileage...if you do a tune up on it, you may get slightly better mileage though. Plugs (NGK), wires, distributor cap/rotor, synthetic oil, synthetic rear-differential oil, etc...those may all help your gas mileage a tad bit.
The 3.9's are just sluggish in general...they're known to be underpowered for our heavy ass trucks. If you wanna add a lil more power to it, look into running lower gears. Like 3.92's or even 4.10's...although that'll be expensive changing them with a 4x4 since you gotta buy gears for both the front and rear.
Adding a few mods will usually help wake it up too...
Modifying the crank position sensor, relocating the IAT sensor (hit or miss mod), larger throttle body, cold air intake, cooler thermo (can sometimes cost mpg however), Superchips tuner, oooh duh...Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers...simple bolt-on requiring no valve lash adjustment and they're supposed to REALLY wake up these engines. Once you've made a lot of intake mods, upgrading your exhaust will help a lot too...high-flow cat and a free-er flowing muffler. Don't go too large though...a lot of people say they lose a lot on the low-end when they run larger exhaust piping.
All in all though...you gotta remember that these are trucks and the engines are built for reliability/durability and not for racing. If you wanna truck that'll really move you'll have to upgrade to a V8 or dump a LOT of money into it.

Message: I get 19-20mpg without a cap and 15 with a cap. 235/70/15 tires. Just put a V8TB on, so we'll see what that does.

Message: My '97 2WD club cab V6 5-speed with OEM-size tires got between 22-24 mpg mostly highway.
