Subject: JBA header question on V6 IP: Logged
Message: Hello, I got this 2001 cc v6 Dakota, with the 4-speed transmission. So far I’ve installed a cold air intake, 40-series delta flow Flowmaster (had professionally installed), and a V8 TB conversion.
So anyhow I would like to put some headers on now to complete the airflow mod. What headers do you guys suggest? Also does the cost justify the HP in your opinion (for those that have them installed).
Also, is there a problem with the y-pipe on this truck? I don’t understand much on the y-pipe, but I understand that it may be an issue on some of these Dakotas and it may be better to not use headers at all.
Advance thanks to all replies.

Message: I installed them a couple weekends ago, i installed them a day before i installed 1.7rrs, but that night i was on the highway and just crusing as usual, pressed on the gas and was blown away..i could really feel the difference.
As for the install: 4.5 hours start to finish, no problems w/ the y pipe, just make sure the flages from the y pipe to the header are nice and parallel..

hey which headers did you get? JBA makes ones with ceramic coating, but costs much more. is this a looks only thing or is this somehow trying to keep the gases hot?

Message: I have the stainless. The ceramic coating is to help keep the heat inside, metal being a heat conductor it can tend to heat up the engine bay. Apparently it helps with longevity too, but I think stainless should be okay that way.
I'm pretty happy with the JBA stainless. Since you have a TB upgrade and muffler, you will be okay as far as torque loss. Mine was kind of sluggish until I upgraded those.
The Y-pipe on ours fits just fine, I think it is the R/T that doesn't. When funds permit, I want to upgrade the rest of my exhaust, but our stock pipes are stainless so they will do for now.

does that mean putting on headers reduces low end torque?

Message: Yeah, it did for me because I put them on before the TB upgrade. It was pretty sluggish at low end, but good on the top. It really clicked once I added the TB & Borla though. The TB balanced it out by bringing more air in.

Message: Chris,
When I installed my headers, I wanted to complete the package for air in and out. I didn't notice that much difference in the low end because I did all my mods before the headers. Top end is stronger. That's where headers help. The coating is up to you. Nickel plated will turn a blueish black color due to heating. The silver or black ceramic should not change color and keep the engine bay a little cooler. I had no problems with the y pipe alignment. I did find it difficult to loosen and tighten the bolts on the y pipe to the headers. There are precats on our y pipe that bulge out making it difficult get the socket up there. Just a suggestion, remove the oil filter so you can hold the top bolt on the headers or use the stock bolts w/ retainers clips so the top bolts doesn't move. The JBA bolts are snug so when you tighten the nut the bolt will turn unless you holt it with a wrench.
On cost effectiveness, I could live with the stock manifolds but I'm anal retentive and I bought the headers on sale for $350 at Truckperformance back in Jan. And Lesley is right about the headers making the engine bay alot cleaner. Besides I heard a few people having stock manifold bolts breaking and having a hell of time fixing them. Good luck.

Message: thanks for the info, you ladies and guys are great.
one more thing, I was thinking of getting the ASP pulley for the crank only. Its only 50 bucks so i figured why not?
so why not? is there any downsides to the pulley mod? I'm not interested in messing with the altenator or water (i dont think i can do a water pump pulley anyway on a 2001).

Message: dude chris,
i just installed my JBA ceramic headers on my Y2K Dak VSixer about a month ago and i could tell the HP difference. i'd say about 10HP more wity Quick D's TB, Kat Box, straight pipe w/no cat converter, and a Flowmaster Deltaflow 40 series.
it fits right in and looks alot cleaner cause of the ceramic look. you can get a good deal at www.speedtweaks.net Bernd's site.
Also i have the ASP crank pulley. my original plan was to use the alternator pulley, but i have an aftermarket sound system and it might drain my battery. if you want the alternator pulley and the belt that goes with it let me know cause i still have them. also, another tip i got from the other dak owners. your fan that connects to the crank is not gonna spin as much, so you might get a little hotter in the engine. i'm installing an electric fan Flex-a-lite's Black Magic 150. Bernd can explain the install tips. hope that helps.
mahalo,
Scotty

Message: k, i think im going to sound dumb by saying this but what the hell.
isnt the fan pressed on, on the 2001 dak models. if that is the case then how does one get it off? i think intensedak tried this , so i read in the history posts and he gave up.
