Message: could some one explain the crank sensor does? does it also regulate fuel to the carb? I've done all the easy things, so its got to be either the crank thingy or that splice 115 i've heard about, or something else? i got no spark, and while i have fuel to the rail, it does not seem to be getting to the carb( at least i can't smell it

Message: fredskid, so you will know all you have to do is turn the key to the on position, then off and back on 3 times and leave the key in the on position and watch the check eng, light, or the odomter and the computer will flash out the code/codes.
Good Luck

Message: No Spark?
Remove the distributor cap at the rear of engine,
have someone crank your engine, and observe the rotation of the distributor rotor, it must rotate clockwise somewhat smoothly as the engine is being cranked. If it doesnt turn or looks like its binding or skips in its rotation, the intermediate gear that drives the oil pump and distributor shaft needs to be replaced.
Its a quik check, hope it helps?

Message: Fredskid.... The camshaft position sensor in the distributor controls the firing of the injectors. When the dist rotates, ither running or cranking, the position of the camshaft is sensed by the brass half-moon at the base of the dist passing through the sensor. It's called the Halo-effect sensor. If it is mal-functioning it will not tell the computer to allow power to the coil to produce a spark. Therefoe the motor wont run. I suggest if you are goint to replace it do not pull the dist out of the truck. The re-positioning of the sensor to get it back in sync can be a real pain in the a$$. Believe me it took me two weeks to get mine back close enough to get the truck to run decsent.
The cank sensor senses the position of the crank shaft. Again if it is not working it wont tell the computer to allow power to the coil. (something tells me that when mine went out it was the fuel). Anyways the motor will crank and crank and wont fire. It is easy to replace it is located on the pass side down about 1/4 way it is held on by 2 bolts and will just come right out.
Hope this helps.

Message: if your crank sensor is out you will have a code.
same with the cam sensor.
Make sure you check all the cylinders for spark. If you get spark on some and not others, then it may be a pcm problem. you will end up having to replace the pcm AND the coil. its a long story but ive been down this road before.
the 92-95 dakotas had pcm problems. when mine went out i thought the whole thing had no spark till i check other cylinders from a recommendation from someone. low and behold, some cylinder were getting spark and others were not. the distributor sends the spark but the computer sets the timing. it does this by controlling the voltage it sends to the coil. when the pcm goes bad( and you will get NO code), it overloads the coil and for some reason only some cylinders get spark.
It may be a long shot but you never know.

Message: YOur problem could be caused by several things.
If you have no spark, then with the key in the run position check for voltage at the coil, green/yellow wire. If no voltage, check ASD relay. When you first turn the key to run, listen carefully, you should hear the fuel pump turn on for a second and then go off, this tells you the pcm is actuating the fuel pump and ASD relays. The ASD relay sends power to the coil and fuel injectors.
I believe the pcm needs to see a good signal from the crank sensor and hall effect sensor (in distributor ) before it will let the truck start.
When I had the same problem, I changed out everything and still no luck. I finally found that the center bolt that secures the pcm connector to the pcm had broken and intermittently would disengage.
check your pcm connector.
as far as the splices are concerned, you should check them regardless of what the problem is. there are several, make sure you get them all, they are mostly close to the power distribution box, the main wires are: red/white, blue, green/yellow.
good luck
