I want to beef up the sound of my 3.9...I have read all the posts about what muffler is best and sounds best. I have it narrowed down to the flowmaster 40 series deltaflow or the super 40... I am just wanting to change our the muffler for not. how easy it it to do this job myself????

it depends on how much experince you have, if you buy the muffler, a shop will usually put it on for you for a fair price. I think which ever muffler you pick, you will have to add some pipe because I don't think either of those mufflers are nearly as long as the stock one. I bought a pipe cutter and it makes good clean cuts, and is easy to use. you would probably need an adapter for both ends to reduce the size of the pipe.
What I did with mine when I rebuilt the engine I bought a high performance cat, and had a shop give me a 2 1/2 inch exhausght from the Y pipe through to the tail pipe. Total cost was $65 (shop cost only) I used a thrush turbo, with the set up and I like the way it sounds.
Good luck,

a lot of people on here use the Dynomax 17748. i believe it is a direct replacement for the stock muffler but better flowing and a little throatier sond. not ricey at all. should bolt right up with some new clamps or weld it in if you prefer.

if you like loud the 40 is ok

check out truckperformance.com

they have the pacesetter prediter dual system
for under $300 I am running 1 on my 4x4 sounds
great actualy a little loud for my taste so I
turned the stainles tips into resonators

This is a bolt on system the only complaint I had
was the 2 clamps for the tips were a little
light so I got 2 heavy duty clamps

The polishes stainless tips do not crimp easy and
the light clamps will barly hold them on

also has the hanger for the drivers side included

just remove your muff and tail pipe and it bolts
right up they make them to order so it takes 2
to 3 weeks to get it and free ship on anything
over $100

2 1/8 OD tail pipes looks nice also and the tips
wont rust I see so many trucks with rusty tips
that look like crap

They clam 16hp gain but from what I seen on my
truck around 10hp the top end gains are the same
as the dynomax and single tail but the pacsetter
did show more off idle low end gains and it
was very noticeable on my 4x4

The system really impressed me the sound and low
end gains made it worth every penny it costs
