Message: just wondering, i have a 2002 3.9 5spd but don't have a hitch. I want to get a pop up camper, it's really light, like 1000 lbs. can i tow this off my bumper. i use to tow jetski's with my s10 off the bumper and that was about 900lbs. also heard not to pull anything with manual transmission but heck i can move the camper around by hand!

Message: Shouldn't be a problem towing with a manual.

Message: There's no problem towing with a manual tranny. The NV3500 is rated at 11,000# GCWR. You'll be way under that number. When I used to tow my tent trailer with my QC I never knew it was there!
Recommendation: don't use the bumper for a towing point. Spend $100ish dollars for a Class III or IV hitch receiver. Do it right.

Message: i agree with modain. if you can buy a hitch for about 100 bucks. easy to install. i've towed a popup both on the bumper and on the hitch.
plus, depending how low your camper sits, the back may drag if you hitch it on the bumper. with a receiver hitch you can always get a drop hitch if needed.

Message: thanks guys for the input. your right that could be a problem towing on the bumper and the clearance of the back of the pop up. I dont have the camper yet, brother in law will sell it to me real cheap and we like to go to the shore alot. I just didn't want to put the hitch on cause to me it's an eye sore and i'm real nuts about my truck and it's looks. but i'd rather do it right than half A$$ job and pay the price. where's a good place to get hitches for the prices mentioned? also, do they still make those T-connector plug in wire harnesses that you just plug into your back tailight harness? the pop up is just a 4 wire plug.

Message: Try Etrailer.com they prolly have everything for about $180 at the most. Plus most of the time they offer shipping for $1. They also carry hidden hitch which hides most of the hitch behind the rear bumper.

Message: the other day i weighed my dakota with the load on a truck scale. all combined, the whole thing weighed in at 12,000 lbs. overall trailer weight was over 7000 lbs. definately not on the bumper.

Message: You can get the trailer harness at Northern Tool ( used to be called Northern Hydraulic ) or other similar place like U haul that carries a variety of trailer items.
I bought a hitch for my dakota with a rolled pan that hides completely behind it. You don't see it until I flip up the license plate. Ran about 180 bucks, but worth it..only works if you have a rolled pan though.. Most of the good hitches out there though only really show the receiver underneath the bumper and that's about it.

Message: If you have TSC near, they sell hitches and wiring harnesses. I'm sure any other farm supply store sells them as well.
Wal-mart sells the hoppy wiring harnesses as well.
I bought a hitch for my old 95 dak at TSC, the location in NC where I bought it from installed any hitch they sold for $25. I have not looked at my local TSC but that may have been a local store thing.
